So the iPhone4 has been announced, 24 June seems to be the release date for both US and UK. During the keynote there was also a calandar showing all the countries for release in July. And suprise:D South Africa was NOT on there. So when are we actually going to get this thing? To me it seems as if vodacom does not care, and will just get it when they receive them. One day you walk into the shop theres no iPhone, the next day there is. They dont bother to inform us of any dates nothing. Even Austria was on that list :wtf: I am tired of having to import Apple products into here because of availibitlity issues. I had to pay R7000 for a 16GB iPad wheras if core group brought the thing in faster , i would of probably saved ova 2 k. I had to pay R8500 for my 1st gen iPhone. Has vodacom even got a clue that this thing is anounced?

Maybe if you read the keynote transcript in a little more detail you would notice that there are 40 more countries receiving the phone in August and 88 more in September... chances are that we're in the 3rd group of countries, and don't for one second think that Vodacom doesn't know what a money spinner this phone is, and it will be available on the day that Apple say it will be available.

Will be interesting to see how vodacom will screw us this time, the 16gb iphone 4 is $199 which is about R1,552.79. Ican promise this is no where near how much we will pay.
What you guys say?

Well its $199 with a 2 year contract, which was almost the same price we paid for the original iphone in 2008 (Sept). I haven't had a chance to go through the keynote script with a fine-tooth comb as yet, but did anyone see when the iphone will be launched in Hong Kong? You can normally buy the unit without any contract and is fully unlocked.

With a 2 year contract yes. "Pre-paid" prices aren't release yet but will (should) be the same as the 3GS when it came out, which was the same as the 3G when it came out (i think)

I was surprised to see that AT&T customers with six months or less left on their contract can upgrade without penalty. Apple must have strong armed AT&T big time for that concession.

As others said that is simply a payin on a 2 year contract. I cannot however complain about vodacom's iPhone plans on offer. At&t contracts start at like $70 p/m (R500) plus you still gotta payin that $199. I could of gotten a 3GS on upgrade for R599P/M. That is ovcourse on the financed offer. So we do not get it that bad compared to them. Just the waiting kills me.

One thing not mentioned in this thread is the issue of micro-sim.

If you wanna get your phone imported from Hong Kong, that's all good but a regular Vodacom SIM card won't work in it until Vodacom come out with Micro-sim.

you can cut the plastic off to fit, it's a normal sim with less plastic. if you're the DIY type.

Vodacom already has those sim cards... its only available if you request it though... not the kind of thing you will find over the counter at your local Pick Pay airtime counter though.

This was a month ago : http://www.techcentral.co.za/vodacom-to-offer-new-micro-sims/14149/

The alternative which a lot of people are doing, is actually cutting / trimming the current sims to fit into the socket.

Edit - Aqua_lung beat me to the cutting part :)

To get it or not: solve your own riddle

I have no doubt that iP4 will make it to SA in Sep/Oct this year. I also have no doubt that Vodacom will release it with restrictive packages upwards of R500 and with a pay-in starting above R3200 for the non-financed option ala 3g and 3gs. Forget US prices as per WWDC. We will pay as always. It will also come with no Vodacom sanctioned repair agents just the outrageous exchange type deal we currently have with Vodacom (unlike the other countries where the product is sold). But we will buy it because it is afterall still the best smartphone in the world and that is why Vodacom will never fix the above. Am I right or not?

Pretty much. There's no doubt the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone in the world.

The US prices as per WWDC are the prices when taken under contract - i.e. that is the pay-in cost.

From the Apple website:

" ... For those who are not eligible for an early upgrade or who wish to buy iPhone as a gift, the prices are $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB) ..." (those are the current 3GS prices).

Add in the fact that we have to pay VAT and shipping here (not included in the Apple Store prices).

The prices should be pretty much the same as the 3G and 3GS were @ Vodacom.

Vodacom AND Core!!!!!!

Possibly the worst two companies in the world together. It will come here AFTER the rest of the world, there will be NO service, and it will cost MORE than twice what it should.

Hi guys ,
I have been doing some research about importing a Iphone 4 from the UK which is not locked to a network and thought that I would share it with you guys:

IPHONE price in UK R 6659.98 (599 pounds)
INCOME TAX 2354.66 (phoned SARS Customs to find out)
DHL SHIPPING R 593.61 (phoned DHL Express)
Total Price to get it here : 9608.25

If I do this I will ship the phone to a friends house in the UK and DHL will Get it there and deliver it to my door.

In come tax. It's the tax you pay for the phone to come in to our country. :P
