After having my adsl down for the last 22 hours I finally gave up and called the dreaded technical support, only to find out that the Fourways Exchange as well as a few others in Gauteng have been down due to a software fault.

Telkom are not able to fix this fault and they have some techies flying in from the USA to fix this. The problem is these techies are still in the air and will only land later this morning. Tekom hope to have this solved in the next 24 hours!!

I suggest everyone who has similar problem telephone in and log a call and then claim a refund for loss of service for 48 hours. Make them hurt where they feel it the most.

No wonder prices are so damn high and service is so hit and miss, each time there is a problem, we have to pay for the techies to fly out from the USA to fix the issues, and I'll bet they get to fly business class too. Thats the job I want ... :D

That's what happens when you don't look after your employees - you end up paying a fortune.

In fact, if this story is true, it's embarassing and shows that South Africa is going backwards in terms of tech skills !

I blame it on affirmative action, but then, I'm white, so I would ... ;)

Now this is just plain retarded ... can't they access the exchange remotely ???.

I remember when the CPU in one of our servers died (not a Windows Intel box) and it phoned home to the mothership in the US and we got the phonecall from them informing us to replace the now very dead CPU.

Have you seen the telkom techies up close ... they don't know **** about stuff. I have feeling that telkom hires this people waiting on the corners of the streets for some work, gives them like 2 pages manual how to install whatever stuff and that's all they ever know about telekoms ...

so I would feel better if they call somebody from some tech-advanced country so they don't screw up real hard.

Why use software with no local support ? Doesn't make any sense, unless they retrenched the 1 oke who knew was was potting .....

Yes.... it's embarrassing, imagine what those techies are telling their friends and family "Honey, i'm flying out to S.A to fix their exchanges, no-one there knows how too..." ...!!!

Great impressions being created of S.A, thanks Hellkom.

... which methinx is a tragic manifestation of 'pale male' insecurity - the bigger picture is this is really due to colour-blind management incompetence - FIRE THE ASSES OF THEIR EXECUTIVE AND MANAGEMENT DECISION-MAKERS!!!

I stay close to fourways and my ADSL went down yesterday afternoon. I logged a call with Telkom and to my surprise a techie phonoe me around 8:00pm and said he was coming to have a look. Had a nice chat with the guy, he was saying how telkom makes so much cash but cant even pay them decent bonuses. Said they got R2400 bonus last year before tax. I felt bad for the guy. Anyway he said it was a software problem and would need to move me to another port. Even organised me a POTS filter. In half an hour my ADSL was back up and even faster than before <evil grin>. This guy deserves a pat on the back. Thumbs up to the Telkom techie who was super cool...and he was not from the states ;-)

It seems that Fourways Exchange is back up now, or at least the Dslam I am connecting to!
