Failure of 3 X HP Pavilion Laptops

In September 2007 I purchased a HP Pavilion Laptop for my son for his birthday. As we were very happy with the laptop, I told my brother to purchase the same laptop which he duly did in February 2008. We were still happy with the laptops so when it was time to purchase a laptop for my older son’s birthday we went and purchased a third HP Pavilion in May 2008.

Below is what has happened with these three laptops

Purchased September 2007 from PC Zone Ballito
Model :HP Pavilion 6521ea
VGA Card failed October 2009

Purchased February 2008 from Incredible Connection Gateway
Product : HP Pavilion dv2500
VGA Card failed March 2010

Purchased May 2008 from PC Zone Ballito
Model : HP Pavilion 6735ei
VGA Card failed April 2010

When the first laptop failed last year at 25 months old we contacted HP and were told that it would cost +-R4500.00 to repair as you could not just replace the VGA card and you had to replace the complete motherboard. I decided that it was not worth repairing and just left it and thought that it was just bad luck that the laptop had broken as I had always believed that HP made a great product.

When my brothers laptop broke with the exact same problem I was rather surprised, but again just put it down to bad luck.

We are now in a situation when the third laptop that we bought has failed with the exact same problem. The first laptop failed at 25 months, the second at 25 months and the third at 23 months – all with the identical problem.

You cannot tell me that this is just coincidence. There is obviously a patent defect with the manufacture of these machines.

I realise that the laptops are all out of warranty, however I believe that HP is duty bound to repair these three computers at no charge. So i got hold of Hp and managed to speak to someone high up in the Hp Head Office who said they would be prepared to fix it but the guy i spoke to suddenly dissappeared and went on leave. I have tried phone him but had no response for at least four months.

Has anyone encountered these problems and if you did, did u managed to get it fixed?
 
Wow, that's some serious bad luck. Normally they are quite reliable. I doubt that HP will fix them for free. With your next purchase have a look at the extended warranty option.
 
Hey, a friend of mine bought a DV9000. It failed due to a similar prob as you have described above. HP offered to replace the mobo for about R8000 lol.
 
there must be ways to expose them, i mean three laptops with the same problem. its like there is a switch they press when the warranty runs out
 
Wasn't there a news story a while back about faulty Nvidia chipsets? Are these intel IGP notebooks or ones using Nvidia vga chipsets? Worth finding out and making an issue.

This is why, no matter what brand, I always get the extra warranty, costs a lot cheaper than replacing the machine or the cost of repairs.
 
Pavillions are notorious for having defects. You're lucky you didn't experience the infamous hinge failure.

That said, HP does make great notebooks, and Pavillions are generally decent machines.
 
My mother-in-law has a HP dv 9000. Cost her over R14,000 2 years ago. It overheats and shuts down randomly and often. Apparently it's an issue which is widely reported on and complained about, if my googling is anything to go by. I opened it up and I see that the cpu and gpu share a common heatsink with a heatpipe arrangement and a piddly little fan, which ramps up to lightspeed trying to cool this stupid design before giving up and crashing dead. At this stage you can literally burn your finger if you touch that heatsink. Stupid !@#$%^& design. What were HP thinking? Where did they test this thing? In Antarctica?

edit: BTW, it's an Nvidia chip and an intel cpu.
 
Those HP Pavilions are junk and won’t touch it with a stick. It is their "consumer" range, and you can see and feel the quality drop on those machine. The plastic is cheap, is I haven’t heard of any of those machines that have made it past the 3 year mark.
I have a “consumer” range Lenovo, and you can also feel and see that it is built cheaper. I`m just lucky mine haven’t given me 1 days trouble and it is now 4 years old

My partner and I each got a R17k HP DV9293ea about 3 years ago. I had performance issues from day 1. Sent the unit in and had the mobo,cpu and vga changed under warranty. Was fine for 2 years then the vga failed again and this time out of warranty the unit cost R7k to repair (replaced mobo, cpu and vga).

My partner had the hinge issue with the screen, repaired under warranty, but more recently the machine reboots randomly, Waiting on a quote out of warranty to repair.

Not particularly found of the brand. Next time will be a Dell perhaps... or Sony..

This not unlucky but pure sh*t quality of HP.
There one laptop has an onboard vga card and other two are nvidia vga cards.
I am sick of HP and this is going futher!
Please let me know who else is having this problem? Thanks

I made a mistake in my first post. They said it was Coincidence and had a very bad attitude and were pretty much not prepared to do anything.
 
They offered a free fix for out of warranty systems, but only in the US. There was mention of a class action law suit but I haven't found anything concrete.
 
Yes my DV6000 Pavilion died just after the warranty expire. Its a doorstopper now. HP SUCKS.
Exactly the same problem as the poster.

How could they have allowed HP to sell such faulty products to us? What a waste...

Won't touch HP ever again. Nice marketing HP.
 
Google that problem with HP Pavilion Laptops. The internet is swarming with people all over the world complaining about it.
HP is lying its not coincidence like they claim.

HP = EPIC FAIL
 
I have a friend who has 2 HP laptops both have died & sent in for repairs.

Dont go for HP laptops, thats all I can say.
 
I have an HP projector - 800x600 DLP, R14,000 at Makro, from a few years ago. Used it a bit, then kept it in storage then tried using it - no picture - bulb is ok but nothing. Returned it to HP for repairs a year ago. I call frequently They give me the run around - it's currently in JHB.
They don't know what's wrong or won't tell me - prolly lost it. I'm prolly going to open a case of theft with the SAPS.

HP - HEWLETT-PACKARD are a cheap skate company. Avoid them. I will never buy an HP product again. Their South African support is also TERRIBLE, INCOMPETENT and possibly WORSE. Honestly, STAY AWAY from HP. HP makes junk. Their Q&A process is bad and support bad too. Even Acer is better. I had an Acer fail on me - screen display - although the laptop works perfectly - just backlight of the LCD died. But that was after a longer while.

If buying a laptop only consider Lenovo or Sony (overpriced) or Mac. If you can import one - a Panasonic (best machines in the world) is also great. Dell may also be ok but avoid HP. Definitely stay away from their projectors.

I would not touch their consumer range either. Their business range is great though.
 
I can agree with most of the above about the HP Pavillion range - in fact mine died of a GPU error as well (minus the numerous other times I had to return it).

If you're in the states you can have it fixed for free because of the lawsuit against HP/nVidia. Their useless cooling design is basically what kills the notebook.

I'll ever recommend an HP to anyone again.
