South Africa ponders vuvuzela ban

South Africa's World Cup organising chief Danny Jordaan may ban vuvuzelas from inside stadiums after complaints from broadcasters and supporters.

The constant sound of the high-pitched horn-like instrument has so far drowned out much of the atmosphere-generating singing usually associated with games.

And Jordaan, when asked if he would get rid of them, told BBC Sport: "If there are grounds to do so, yes.

"We did say that if any land on the pitch in anger we will take action."

France captain Patrice Evra has already blamed the noise generated by the vuvuzelas, which has been likened to the drone of thousands of bees, for his side's poor showing in their opening group game against Uruguay, which finished goalless.

He said: "We can't sleep at night because of the vuvuzelas. People start playing them from 6am.

"We can't hear one another out on the pitch because of them."

Jordaan conceded that while the noise was irritating for some people, they were doing all they could to minimise the impact.

"We've tried to get some order," he continued. "We have asked for no vuvuzelas during national anthems or stadium announcements. It's difficult but we're trying to manage the best we can.

"We've had some broadcasters and individuals [complaining] and it's something we are evaluating on an on-going basis."

Jordaan admitted he was not a huge fan of them himself. "I would prefer singing," he said.

"It's always been a great generator of a wonderful atmosphere in stadiums and I would try to encourage them to sing.

"In the days of the struggle (against apartheid) we were singing, all through our history it's our ability to sing that inspired and drove the emotions."

I heard the singing fron both sets of supporters last night, it won't get banned ;)
 
What some of us of MyBB have been saying all along really... listening to team songs will beat the monotone vuvuzela any day of the week.

I think the solution to this is not a ban... (which would not go down well with many south africans).. but rather a request for fans to voluntarily stop using them and to start singing songs. That will be much more palatable for most people. Give them something to sing... put some words up on the screens. Hand out flyers at the entrances... get e-mail chains going.
 
SO only the French team heard the Vuvuzelas. The Uruguayan team obviously must be deaf if it was the reason the french lost.
 
I fully agree with the bolded part. One of the things I was looking forward to were the songs and chants of the supporters but all you can hear is the damn vuvuzela's. So far out of all the mathes I've watched, I've just hear UDA being chanted a few times last night.

The songs and chants of supporters is what makes the vibe and atmosphere, not vuvuzela's.
 
Please the French can't play football that's why they suck. They are just shifting the blame and believe it or not I see so many French fans blowing the vuvuzela.
 
Its interesting how all the teams who can't get a win are moaning. Spain after they got knocked out last year, the BBC now, French yesterday. I didn't see any South Koreans blowing it but Argentines were blowing it as if it was maradona himself

I wonder what the frenchs rugby teams excuse is
 
All I know that 3am is not the right time to be blowing those things, seriosly, I do sleep unlike the rest of the population it seems!

They ban loud music inside dorms at uni, but idiots with vuvuzelas are allowed because it is "cultural"

No, I am... but I think that by asking the fans to show some restraint (it worked for the anthem singing), they can make most of it go away... until someone scores a goal.
 
I am more than mildly irritated by the constant droning of the Vuvuzelas.
It is one thing to be patriotic, and have a National unity, but it is something else entirely to constantly have to listen to the blasting of Vuvuzelas.
We are becoming the laughing stock of the world by using Vuvuzelas only.
What has become of singing / chanting songs during a game?

People start blowing their Vuvuzelas at 5am, and only stop again at 5 am. Their is not rest from the sound of blasting Vuvuzelas.
I say BAN them entirely.
 
I reckon we need drums instead. The crowd is bound to develop a rhythm with those automatically & it'll sound like war drums. :D
 
Ban the idiot who created them.Did he even test out the sound b4 selling them.
 
I like the idea of blowing the vuvuzela in important parts, like when your teams scores a goal or something
