My younger brother and i have gone 50/50 on afrihost uncapped 4mbps line. His has his own pc connected to the router just as have i. Now im completely aware of software to block bit torrent.
What i need is some way to make him understand what he is doing is wrong. Ive tried many times to talk to him but just cant get through.Personaly i think afrihost has a good service here and i dont want it to be spoiled.

Any tips on what i can tell him?

I think you need to get yourself a router where you can give him 50% of the bandwidth and that he has no way of altering/bypassing that router's configuration.
Currently I'm quite fond of my MikroTik RB750, since its quite cheap (R325 excl VAT) and packed with features. With that router you can specify rate limiters or even total download/upload limitations.

Whenever I want to game, I just enable the bandwidth limiters (a queue tree in my case) that limits all the traffic except for the game protocols :)

If you don't want to limit his throughput, but just want him to download less then you can spin him some story that if you exceed like 100GB/month then they'll place your account in a pool where the traffic gets shaped very badly.
I know SAINET did this, but I doubt that Afrihost/Mweb do this too.

Report your brother to SAFACT.
Contact details are on their website.

www.safact.co.za

Hmmm, I just had a look at that website ... I wonder whether safact has the express written approval to use all the logo's for the companies listed on their "members" list. Or if they just took them off their pages and hyperlinked them...considering the poor quality and that they're not all the same sizes.

If not, I wonder if I can report the safact to safact for copyright infringement. :D

I think getting a router like yours is 4sure tops on my list of what to do's. Only thing is it would half my bandwidth :( lol at you guys for saying i should report my brother haha ill admit it is funny. This is more of a mental issue and need to get through to him. Thanks for the advice though and ill try the badly shaped account thing. Afrihost do infact shape accounts according to the users usage dynamicaly per hour now.

There is one more option:

Klap him once for every meg he uses over his 50%

So your 3 options are:
1) Get "special" router
2) Report him to SAFACT
3) Klap him repeatedly.

Let us know which one you go with.

Ok. No. Seriously, Go for the router.

you could always put netlimiter on his pc. :)

4. Rather get Mweb uncapped, then the bit torrent protocol is effectively shaped with a much lower priority, and because shaping by Mweb is on a protocol basis rather than a usage basis, any "abuse" from your brother will not negatively affect your internet experience, nor will your account ever be throttled.

Simple, get an application that can shape his connection.

Like NetLimiter, just install it and limit his connection speed, or get a firewall that allows you to determine the speed of incoming and outgoing connections.

Or you could just remove the internet connection settings from your router and manually dial from your pc, that way he won't have internet...

Put a few cakes of soap in a school sock & make sure you hit him right between the eyes when he has just fallen asleep. Its not a nice way to wake up but it should do the trick.

+1 I have torrent running 24/7 and it the only connection I've ever found that as soon as I start browsing my torrents drop down to almost zero.

i don't think you'll ever be able to convince someone never to download. how is he downloading though, thru public means? if so IS is bound to forward an copyright infringement notice email they get sent from the publisher's mailbot sometime, that might scare him off for a while
