Thanks for the e-mail and apologise for the late reply. Let me see if I can shed some light on this dilemma for you. The current ADSL market is rather hot property right now.

The market will change radically in the next 3 to 4 months. What has happened is that the wholesale provider, SAIX, to all the ISP's you mentioned below, including TelkomInternet, allowed for what has become a point of abuse, a soft cap. This allows for 3 Gigs of traffic, both local traffic and international traffic. When the cap is reached the product keeps working so a user could still get to mail and local banking. What is now closed, is the international portion of the access, but if you keep using the service, you can quite happily exceed the cap to 10 to 30 Gigs with reasonable ease.

What this did to the industry is allow for these new ISP's to "exploit" the weakness in the system. This has lead to dare I say abuse and all ISP's will be held accountable for the end-users usage. All for a fare price I might add.

So I have two suggestions for you, make hay while the sun shines and go for the cheapest service while it lasts. Alternatively we will have a new range of services out in about 3 to 4 months. We also have a smaller service of 2 Gig at R199 which I don't think will be changing in price. If all things roll out at the end of the day, we hope to have a service at around R100 per Gig offering. Of course the more you need the cheaper it will become.

So everything depends on your habits and how much traffic you need.

To Whom It May Concern:



As you most probably know, certain ISPs have been offering amazing prices for their shaped ADSL accounts, generally with higher caps too. On the 15th of July, I applied for a TelkomSA Advanced Option (R249 with 3GBs of data usage). In the past week, ISPs have dropped prices dramatically, to name a few:



Web Africa – 30GB Shaped accounts for R199

Axxess – 10GB Shaped accounts for R249

SAOL.COM – 10GB for R199 (CHECK)



Is TelkomSA planning on lowering its prices? Please inform me ASAP as I would like to know if I need to cancel my TelkomSA account before my ADSL line is installed, or if it’s worth it for me to wait. Otherwise I would like to apply for one of the above ISPs ASAP to avoid the rush. For the record, I do not want a higher cap account, just lower prices.

Although I recieved several read reciepts for this message, and several saying that the message was deleted without being viewed, ONE EMPLOYEE replied! I take my hat off to him.
 
R100 per GB?? Are they out of their minds? That would make 3GB more expensive than it is now, which is silly.

We were discussing it being as expensive as R50, which is already ridiculously expensive, but R100 is simply unbelievable.
 
R100 per gig they are ****ing insane, if its priced like that i'll go back to ISDN where I can download alot more for alot less. :mad:

I think that employee might have got it wrong...even Telkom isn't that stupid to "raise" prices like that....and haven't ICASA put a formula to limit increases?
 
I think this guy must have been thumb sucking when he said R100. R10 would be good. R15 would be acceptable at a squeeze, but no more than that.
 
I think the Telkom guy was trying to say pricing would start at about R100/GB and get cheaper the more you had. So 3 GB would not be R300.
But I am not sure anyone at Telkom even knows what is going to happen in 4 months time yet.

Be careful not to blame Telkom employees for the decisions made higher up.

The last time I chatted with a Telkom employee, she asked me what part of Telkom did I work for. I told her that I never worked for Telkom, to which she said, "Oh, that's amazing, because whenever we get a 'nice' customer on the phone they are almost always former or current Telkom employees who know what we go through every day."
 
So what do the ISP's have to say about this? Is this true? Are we going to be paying more in a few months time?

And by the way, up yours Telkom!
 
100 a gig.. fan-bloody-tastic.. I can hardly wait. I truly believe that the devil himself has more morals than telkom.

I can not BELIEVE that these ****ers can get away with **** like this.
 
R100/GB is about R85 too much.. ****ing ****heads.

From what I've heard most of the ISP's said the same thing. That there will be a change to per gig billing in the next 3 months and that the price is expected to be a lot higher than what we pay for 30GB now.

Another knock for the consumer in SA, and another huge step backwards for telecoms in the country. **** you Teklom, **** you very much. It's days like this that I feel I live in Suck Africa.
 
Just to put this pay per gb into perspective, Slingshot in New Zealand offer a basic 1mbps package with a 3 gb cap for $45(R202.00) and additional data at $10(R45) for 10GB. Telkom can you justify bandwidth in South africa costing more than 2000% its cost in New Zealand? They have similar issues of distance from major bandwidth centers, undersea cables and small markets.

The rumours about TelkoDemonopoly charging on a per GB basis appear to be true, and the only thing I can think of that would explain TelkoDemonopoly's reasoning here, is that they expect ICASA's ADSL report will say that the monthly ADSL connectivity rental must be dropped altogether, that way TelkoDemonopoly can only make a substantial ADSL-specific profit on the normal monthly analogue line rental and wholesale [but overpriced] bandwidth...if that were to happen, you would be paying analogue rental + R100 == ~R200/month for 1GB, or a sliding scale upwards for more than 1GB...which would still workout to be very expensive if you needed say 10GB/month, and 30GB/month would be prohibitively expensive...:(
