SA's Petabytes of broadband traffic

MTN South Africa CTO Sameer Dave recently said that their network currently carries around 220 TB of data traffic on its network, and this figure is expected to grow to between 250 TB and 260 TB during the World Cup.

I carry around 2TB (not counting my uncapped users) on my (ADSL) network.... these figures are not so great considering I only have about 600 users on my network :confused:

Just because they have the most connections (mxit ftw!), doesnt mean they do high volumes. You cant do high volumes on the mobile networks without being ripped a new hole.

The mobile network are not big great networks. Theyre pricey convenient networks with loads of mxit users.

So using the figures in: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadband/13240-Broadband-War-The-winners-and-losers.html where MTN are estimated to have 700 000 users...using 220 TB.. I have 600 users using 2TB....

You do the math.

South Africa does 1TB per month on ADSL. The rest of the 999TB is on Gary's hard drive.
 
You're forgetting the 1TB a month that Rendier does with regularity...
 
If my math is right my average user gets 3.3 GB of bandwidth. While the average user on MTN network uses 0.3 GB.
 
can you imagine what first world ISP's are carrying. Virgin, in the UK promotes downloading HD movies on their network and our companies have the ****s if you download a single mp3 (at triple the cost).
 
In SA I thougt i was using the Internet. Boy, I was wrong! Now living in Europe I understand what the Internet really is. It is UNCAPPED and FAST!

Listerning to the Radio online the whole day and flipping through Youtube as if it is DSTV.

When I stayed in SA I tried to use more than my 4Gb a month and it was possible but not easy.
Now being in Europe and it seems I can't use less than 30 to 40 Gb a month.

R120/month = 8 Mbps day time, 24 Mbps after hours. All uncapped, of course.
R270/month = internet + DSTV

The last stats from Internet Solutions showed that were at least 1000 home users who were averaging 1 Terabyte a month. :)
 
I am with Vodacom while I wait for my ADSL. I use 4 gigs a month and weep for each bit that I use because of the costs. R100 a gig - come on!

Vodacom data cost more like R180/gig???
