What happens to older iPhones?

With the expectation that many iPhone users will inevitably upgrade to the newer models, what happens to the millions of "old" iPhones?

Im sure a certain percentage of these second hand phones will be resold to those not being able to afford the newer models, but I don't expect that to be a large percentage.

Another percentage will simply be "hand-me-downs" to younger brothers/sisters/friends, also not a large percentage.

What about the rest?
 
The same thing happens to old iPhones that happens to old Nokias and HTCs. Or do other phones go to cell heaven and iphones to cell hell? I fail to see why this is iPhone specific.

The difference is that the iPhone 3GS is still relatively new, and the iPhone 4 is almost out. So with iPhone 3GS users purchasing iPhone 4's, what will they be doing with their 3GS's?

Nokia and HTC is different in this case coz people usually keep them for longer before upgrading, rendering them almost obsolete by the time people upgrade.
 
The iPhone, any rendition, is still an extremely good media player. So, I would expect, unlike nokia's et al, old iPhone's still have a life - they can be used as an iPod. I have two "old" iPhones, and both are still being used, docked in Hi-Fi players, they are still very useful devices, and can be returned to phone service if the need ever arises. My old nokia and Sony Ericsson phones are lying in a pile somewhere in one of my cupboards - no use for them anymore

iOS4 issues

I have a 3Gs. and it was jailbreaked on 3.1.2 so i decided to get the new iOS4 and I used the PwnageTool_4.01

Problem 1: NO SERVICE! i have no network service. cant call, sms, or mms

Problem 2: all my Cydia apps is gone and wont recover. Even the apps that I got through Installuous.

HELP? PLEASE!
 
Make sure "Activate baseband" is unticked when setting Expert options in PwnageTool, before building the custom firmware. If your phone is an SA 3GS that's already unlocked it should then be fine.

I guess you can count me in the other 50%. iOS4 on my 3G is too sluggish, given how little I gained. I really like the changes made to Mail though, but I don't think enough to stick with this.
 
hi guys,

downloading the new update has failed twice for me...when i have 4 minutes left to finish the download i get an error message : 9006

i thought it was my internet connection but its working fine.

i reset my router and started again, but no change.

any thoughts ?

William, I have iOS4 available for you if you're in the Centurion area. Can wack it onto a disk Also the SDK (XCode 3.2.3) if anyone is interested. PM me.
 
my iphone is working 110% now on iOS4.

I actually did the process from start. And this time around i clicked yes to update my baseband. The restoring part took forever, cz my phone is almost full. need more space LOL.

This new OS is cool!!!
 
I'm on iOS4 GM on iPhone 3GS how would i go about Jaibreaking? Do i need to restore with official iOS4?

Took about 25 min, and you can't use the phone during the process. If you have a 3G, I wouldn't recommend it. You get very little new and a substantial performance penalty.
