Hello, forums.
I'm pretty sure this has been asked at least a million times but is there some way to get access to the paid-apps on the Android Market from my HTC Desire, on MTN?

I see it... but it seems to need su and root access. I don't really want to root my phone.

There is one that doesnt require root, but it doesnt work for everyone (think it might have something to do with firmware versions or something). The link is in the official android thread.

It dropped down to the second page somewhere. Unfortunately the app that I linked to doesnt seem to exist anymore and googling the details of the apk just gives me the version that needs root :( So no luck it seems, sorry about that.

So there's no legal way to get paid apps? I want an Android phone at some point but this just sucks. Even Nokia's Ovi store works in SA.
Why would they block SA?

Guys, just root. I've had my Desire for about a month now, and I really wanted to avoid rooting if I could, but then I just decided to do it, and I'm so glad I did. I can now buy paid apps, I'm running Froyo (Android 2.2), and I can use apps that require root access. If something goes wrong, I can just unroot.
Just root :)

How To - Unroot HTC Desire (http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-unroot-the-htc-desire/)
There are loads more, but use MoDaCo (http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/307365/14-jun-r6-riskfreeroot-htc-desire-rooting-guide-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/) guide to root, the new r6 release (14 June 2010) is said to be risk free ;)

Not HTC, but Google. Google is preventing access to paid apps for all countries expect a select few. Not sure why, and nobody seems to have a straight answer.

yep its a google decision. seemingly driven by the fact that their direct influence is through the nexus. i guess one has to watch where the nexus sells to know how markets will open without hacks.

I don't think it has anything to do with the Nexus (I have one). Whether you have access to the paid market is dependent on what cell provider you use (that's why marketEnabler spoofs AT&T or some US carrier). There are some legal reasons that I don't understand. For example, SA users can't buy iTunes music, or Amazon MP3s. It doesn't make sense - we can buy CDs of the same music, or order CDs from Amazon, but can't buy MP3s. When the [copyright] lawyers get involved sense sometimes flies out the window.

Easy as 1 2 3:
1. ROOT (You will be glad you did anyway)
2. Scan, download and install Market Access:

3. Browse, download and use paid apps.
Done. :)

Do you have to go through the Android Market to load an app onto your phone? In Windows Mobile you can download a .cab file and install it directly - can you side load an app with the Android equivalent (.apk, IIRC?)? I'm looking to make the move to Android but a complete inability to access paid for apps without rooting might be a dealbreaker for me.

veethree, you can install apps via the SD card, yes :) You'll need to buy them online first, obviously :)

I have a rooted (or should I say, have installed Draky's ROM) Samsung Galaxy S i9000-GT and used market enabler to get access to paid apps. My problem is when I try to buy them it asks me to select a country but on checkout it wont accept my telephone number, and I had to lie about my zip code etc. Any ideas?

Do you have a Google Checkout account? You should just use that to pay, it's dead easy and hassle free.
