100 Mbps Ericsson LTE demonstrated in JHB

Using LTE Reddy streamed eight simultaneous high definition videos, adding that the technology allows for a 25 GB Blue-Ray video to be downloaded in around 30 minutes.

WOW baby!!!! Those speeds are fast enough to blow your panties off! BUT, as many forumites have said on here before....pricing pricing pricing????????
 
Just to be clear, yes you can download a bluray in 30 minutes (haha, that's legal..) - if you are the only person using the cell and are very close to the base station and the backhaul is at least 100Mbps. Real world speeds are far, far lower and average around 10Mbps. But still an impressive technology.

Just please don't be fooled by these tech demo's that seems to be cropping up lately. The access technology says nothing about the quality or speed of your connection.
 
Don't get so excited, it's nowhere near commercialisation yet.
 
Wow ! 100mbps = R20/s

So you can pretty much blow your entire salary in 15~30 minutes and you would still not have as much data as most M-Web ADSL users do in a month.

True, these tests are done in perfect conditions, which almost never happens in the real world.
So where is LTE my connection??????? :D
 
I WISH EVERYONE WOULD STOP QUEAMING ALL OVER THIS AND REALIZE THAT @ 100mbps YOULL BE CLOCKING ABOUT R100 / minute at current prices. WTF DOES THAT HELP.
 
the one good thing from this article is that... its happening right here in ZA... so in time (x years) we can expect to see it reality on our side as consumers.

we had mixed feelings about EDGE articles too, back in the day when 56K dial up was king :-)

Very true, but one has to give Vodacom credit for doing a live LTE demo on its current network – and also breaking into the Internet. Their Internet speed of 80 Mbps was particularly impressive.

Mobile is however getting there – in this demo the latency was 13 ms (obviously on net)…getting closer to what you will experience on ADSL .

Also what backhaul network was used in the Ericsson demo?
 
What's up with this race to the fastest mobile wireless ?

First get the basics right, like, let my 3G work without interuption, at home in Bellville
No-one cares what speed it is, if it doesn't connect

Then on top of it, your pricing model makes a mockery of this fast speed in real life usage
 
Controlled environment demo is very different to one on a commercial Network

While the 100 Mbps is impressive I can only agree wth rpm that getting decent speeds in a real network is what counts.
Pity that Ericsson only managed this after Vodacom - Vodacom using Nokia Siemens Networks equipment.
 
I am sure you will be the fastest gimp on mxit .......now have a look at the cost of getting that blue-ray , i am sure it would be cheaper just to go and buy the bloody thing at pick n pay hyper market than downloading it . Sure it might be great to have that speed but can you really use it and afford it ?
 
What are the odds (once it does become commercially viable) that mobile providers would be dropping their data prices to ADSL or (preferably) below current ADSL levels? Would that ever happen, or are we just totally screwed for the ever? From all these announcements in the past few days it would appear that mobile internet access will be our only bet to get high speed broadband in SA seeing that Telkom has totally failed us, and LLU is unlikely to happen in this lifetime.

Actually that wasnt LTE.....the standard requires speeds of 1gbps,Ericsson is the only vendor to demonstrate this.The equipment in SA is the same as in the Barcelona test, its just the samsung dongle that is limiting the speed

x years ? Yes, if that is a latin number then I agree, we will wait at least 10-15 years for commercial availabiilty in S-Africa. What about bandwidth costs ? Congestion ? Will South Africa even have any functioning road network left by then ?
 
Good going Samsung. Nice to see the LTE download speeds @ 100 MBPS and latency down to 13ms. Samsung already has working 300 MBPS 802.16m hardware/software that runs in either the 2.3 GHz/ 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands. Also interesting to note is that the first multimode handsets will be available before the end of the year.
