What does a tablet do in real life and advice pls?

Ok, so it is close to my daughter's B-day. We already bought a digital camera , since the previous one went mia at school. We are looking for a 2nd, cheaper prezzie.

She is looking to go to varsity next year. The question of a Tablet has come up. Now, I know pc's, but Tablets is only a word for me. I've never sold 1 or work with 1 or ever seen 1.

Genius G-Pen 450 + Tablet & Genius G-Pen 4500

Are these any help for a student?
What are the practical daily uses of a Tablet please?
Can you only write or sketch on the area the area you see or are there options for new pages?
I assume this can work independent from a pc or laptop till you download it to the pc?

The 2 tablets are fairly cheap and I assume at he bottom of the range. Taking the price in account (R350 - R450 retail) and that I can get it a bit cheaper from my supplier, are they value for money or should I look at an other make within the same price bracket.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Are you talking about digitising tablets, or a tablet PC?
There is a massive difference between them, and the price reflects as much.

At R350- R450 I'm guessing you're talking digitising tablet, and well that needs a PC to work and can't work independantly of one, and they're predominantly used for Graphic Design and such....

If you mean a digitiser, you should get a good one or none at all. Is it going to be used to draw/design things? or just to mess around? Either way get a good one or none at all. I bought a R700 model 8 years ago and it was rubbish. Was a good make too.

I would suggest one for at least R3,000.
 
I got my sister (who is a designer) and a friend who is an art student, tablets at Esquire for about R550. The brand is Manhattan, it works very well. The next step up is a Wacom Bamboo, which is like R1000 or more. I rate this tablet pretty good though.

Yes, I was not even aware of these terms, but it is a digitising tablet.
So it must be connected at all times to a pc to work? Not the way it was explained to me by supplier and we were talking about the G-450 pen tablet.

That is still sort of a problem, but currently on the table are BA Com (Communication) and BEd (Education) and somewhere there in between, some arty farty subjects.

It is not out and out for graphics design or such.

We are wondering if it will help as an study /class / note taking / quick scribble /picture draw aid?

P.S, you can't maybe get any more of those R150.00 gadgets you mentioned the other day?
My HTC K-Jam eventually packed up and I gave my Omnia 900i to my daughter. She lost her Ericson while driving on the scooter. :(

You should look at getting your daughter a netbook or small laptop (12" - 15.4"). It'll be invaluable to her for studying. With those subjects she's most probably going to have to presentations and work in groups for projects. It is often hard to find an available PC at uni for work. So a little laptop is very nice, especially if lectures release slides for the course are made available.
But nothing better than pen an paper for Note taking.

Hmm, yea. I have a netbook, but hoped to sent her packing with one of the ps's (we have 5) as I enjoy using the netbook in front of the tv.
Maybe I should buy one closer to the time.

unless she's doodling all day and wants to become an illustrator or animator, you may as well just stick it in the cupboard now.
i'm also with peter here.
don't buy a k@k tablet. the responsiveness and build quality just isn't worth it.

why don't you get her a decent lens, tripod or flash for the camera instead?
oh, sorry, i assumed it was a dslr.
 
Ja, forget the tablet. Get her a netbook with a DECENT keyboard or a sub-notebook like the 13" Lenovo Edge etc, if it does not get affirmatively shopped or lost it will last her through all her years at varsity. Get insurance either way ;)

Lol, my tools got affirmatively shopped without management consent a couple of weekends ago.

Do you think I can ask for an Alsation puppy under hardware? Our Labrador either slept (he is a bit old), or he played with them (he just love to play) or he showed them where the tools were ( he liked to carry my tools around).
