FNB Connect mobile call promotion unwrapped

using SIPdroid you can use the SIP client to make default calls. quite cool :)
 
How does this compare to skype out? Is it the same thing?

I can make fring to fring/skype calls for free on my 5800 (provided reception is adequate). Uses a bit of data, but I have a bundle, so it's basically free. Think the last time I measured it was about 12megs for ~40min.

If you're organised and can manage to get the people you want to call onto skype, you can basically get the same thing free :)

I signed up for FNB Talk yesterday and configured my Telkom Mega200VWR router (Rebranded Billion) with FNB connect's SIP server details. It worked perfectly and I could hook up a standard POTS telephone to my router and receive and make calls on my FNB provided 087 number. Just use the settings:

Server: voice.fnbconnect.co.za
Username: <your 087 number>
Password: <your password provided via SMS>
Clear proxy/domain settings.

It seems to Just Work, but I couldn't dial my 087 number from my Telkom landline, I will investigate it further and contact FNB about it. Dialing out to any number and dialing in from a cell worked.

I am currently trying to reverse their PC "Digital Phone" client to figure out how it sends SMSes using your account. It's coded in obfuscated Java and uses SSL to connect to voice.fnbconnect.co.za. Anybody also interested in figuring it out, please PM me.

Almost the same, but not entirely in the sense that it's a full-fledged 087 VoIP number where with SypeOut you can only dial out and it's not standard SIP. For calling landlines and cellphones it is MUCH cheaper than SkypeOut as well.

called them, they said i need an fnb account for it to work so it seems like too much of a hassle for me... maybe they should look into taking credit cards...

Thanks for those details.

I always knew about the FNB Talk package but only recently after looking into Asterisk PABX for my office and possibly using Skype SIP that I saw that you can use FNB connect as well for even lower costs.

May I ask if you were able to phone the 087 number from the Telkom line?
 
Yea, we sorted it out. Turns out it was a problem with the way Telkom calls are routed in the Western Cape to FNB's VoIP systems. I haven't had any other issues, but on the other hand I haven't been using the system extensively, only for home use.

Right now they are offering a 25c/minute promotion to ALL numbers.

Thanks, going to test it out then as it costs nothing to trial it out compared to Skype. I do see that they seem to target home users as I could not link my business account to the FNB connect account. Thanks again
