Duncan seems a nice chap but you question his understanding with a statement like this

Duncan, if you're reading this. EVERY "broadband" provider eventually ends up at Telkom. They are FORCED to go through Telkom. THERE IS NO competition.
 
:eek: I am astounded at the ignorance of some of these companies. When they talk about their new offerings they make them sound fantastic and give you the impression that they are going to take the market by storm and then..... they mention the 500Mb cap or something equally as disappointing. Unbelievable!!! Are they living on the same planet as we are or what?
Government needs to open the market to people that have a lot more ambition and vision than what we currently have on offer.
I get the feeling that soon there is going to be some drastic steps taken which will change the market in a big way and all the "service" providors that we have at the moment will disappear into insignificance because they have not go a clue. The only reason they are in the game is because they had a license that allowed them to enter the market. Wait till the real telecoms players arrive!!!!!
 
you mean overseas telecoms telkom would never allow that , because they know they will provide better for less and they will have match and they wont have all that betuiful money

How would Telkom stop 2 way satalite internet?
 
My immediate urge on reading that - was to look for the 'clickthrough' link - to send a 'you stupid effing moron wannabe journalist' type of spanking email to the writer of the article, as well as a huffy mail to the Editor, pointing out that they're employing someone to write about technology who clearly lacks the knowledge to do so..

POINT BEING: When articles are stashed on mybroadband - what about adding a live link to the original article - OR a live 'mail to' email link to the article writer/Editor of that periodical - so that we (myadsl) can respond directly to articles reposted..

It could be very useful to provide a method for us to respond immediately at article writers/Editors - so that when 'journalists' get things wrong, they get hit with a fast flood of huffing and puffing emails..

Does Telkom understand what ADSL is?

Repeated statements that it has competition in the market indicates that Telkom does not have the foggiest idea of what ADSL is.

ADSL is the cheapest way of providing broadband connectivity to the masses.

Any mobile (= radio link) solution is a luxury solution. This requires substantially more capex to roll out.

To claim that ADSL is currently operated in a "competitive market" is like comparing a Volkswagen Citi Golf with the best of breed BMW, with a luxury sedan of name somewhere in between.

ADSL being the entry level product. MyWi, iBurst, GPRS, EDGE and 3G being the luxury end of the market.

Statements that there are 5 competitive products in the broadband market indicates that Telkom does not understand what ADSL is about - the bread-and-butter of modern Internet access to all.

MyWi, iBurst, GPRS, EDGE and 3G are competing with each other.

PS: GPRS and EDGE are not broadband at all, and it is doubtful if MyWi is broadband.

Okay, after months and months of lurking in these forums you've managed to draw me in mccrack. When I reread my piece this morning I, too, cringed when I read the word "robust" in that sentence. It shouldn't have been there. The right word, the word I should have used was "growing" when describing the competition that Sentech and WBS are providing to Telkom.

And you are right when you imply that the market is distorted. It certainly is. I wouldn't go as far as saying that there is "NO competition". But we won't have true competition -- nothing near it. Until there is robust (this time I meant to use the word) competition in international services and until the local loop has been unbundled or there is are wireless local-loop alternatives that cost the same or less to deploy and manage, prices will remain higher than they should be. I was certainly not suggesting in my article that the situation is in any way normal or desirable. I hope I didn't create that impression.

But, anyway, thanks for luring me into these forums, mccrack.

I have enquired, its far too expensive. Installation costs of approx. 30.000 Rand plus monthly fees of 4300 Rand makes that a solution for the super rich.

I think Duncan has correctly point out that with competition intensifying ,Telkom may later have to reduce its price anyway (with or without regulatory intervention)

Sentech and WBS have entry level package starting from R199 P/M and R299 P/M,the included bandwidth is limited but It does serve the SMME market for always on Internet and E-mail usages.

Personally I think a reasonable price cut in ADSL product range can help Telkom achieve better economies of scale,Affordable ADSL can be viewed as an opportunity for Telkom .because suddenly every middle class household will become a potential ADSL customer.

I am glad to see Sentech has restrategise its product plans - its never too late to fix a mistake.

But do you realistically expect Sentech to compete with Telkom's ADSL ?
Does Senctech and WBS still have any clients that aren't contracted in?
I was sorely disappointed by Sentech, when i heard they were launching i
thought they were the next best thing since sliced bread. I'm still more
impressed by sliced bread.

Duncan, i can imagine that you have learnt quite a bit over the last couple
of months "lurking" on the outside ;) . I know i certainly have.

This is an outstanding website. The consumer activism is wonderful and I am amazed at what everyone here has achieved. I know for a fact that many senior executives in the telecom industry lurk in these forums. I just wish this sort of consumer activism would spread to other industries.

It is not ideal for personal use - who requires large downloads

For SMME I think Mywireless can compete with ADSL
