How to beat Internet Piracy: Content providers must wake up!

Give me Stargate Destiny on TV and I wont feel the desire to borrow a copy :D

However, even with satellite TV they are only showing Stargate episodes from the 1990`s. Since I dont feel like waiting 50 years to watch it on TV and would prefer to watch it in my life time.... thepiratebay suites my needs.
 
It seems in SA we're more backward than most places since we don't even have an iTunes store where you can download music from. In addition, we're normally one complete season behind the US in TV programs. I'm seriously considering canceling my DSTV and using the internet for all entertainment. Think about this, you can now get a vpn into the UK for 10 pounds a month and watch all BBC and ITV TV on demand. In addition, you can download the latest TV show immediately through torrents/usenet etc.

If it wasn't for my love of sport i would have cancelled DSTV ages ago.... Already getting my fix of HD series, movies and documentaries from other sources.....

Yep - sport here too. And actually only Super14 and F1. Could watch F1 on bbc so now I just need live S14 streaming! Then bye bye DSTV. Can't believe they don't have a Sports package. I have to have everything including Afmag channel etc.
 
Excellent Article Matthew! This is what many of us have been saying all along. It is time for the content producers to free themselves from the old archaic distributors and hook up with fresh new online distributors who know how to monetize downloads.

If other internet entrepreneurs have been coining it for years... there is no reason why the content producers themselves cannot do so.

I foresee the day when Media Industry groups, Retail Giants and Record labels are all obsolete. All content producers will be rewarded directly on the internet at the push of a button.

Imagine a "Like Button" on a Youtube video that transfers $1 or $10 to the producer of the video. Clicking that button gives me the right to download that video for myself and use it on all my devices. All of those micropayments instantly around the world translate into a massive instant distribution channel for the content producer. He makes profit without packaging and retail costs... and the ISPs make profit out of bandwidth transfer.

Walmart and Game go back to selling the devices that play our content... but not the content itself.
 
If and when this sort of global content distribution maturity takes shape we could definitely see a flattening out of the piracy spike.

I agree totally, but pricing will play a huge roll as well. It won't change much if, for instance, all music is available for legal download, but you have to pay R10.00 per mp3. Recently I got a R200.00 Nokia music voucher with my new phone, brilliant I thought. I log onto the Nokia store just to find that my R 200.00 voucher just barely buys me one CD, and then it is DRM'ed, limiting my use for it. I still have not even bothered to use it due to the DRM, it simply does not suit my needs, which is to be able to listen to music on any number of different devices I might choose.

Last night before the soccer I watched Top Gear on DSTV. I clicked on information and saw that it was series 6. What a joke I could pull series 15 from TPB if I wanted.

Great article! I agree wholeheartedly with it. I still think that piracy is wrong, but this is definately the reason that some people pirate things.

And never in HD. But we do get "Being Indie" and "Ellen" in HD. The more I think about it the more I think I may cancel DSTV. So I have to download the S14 a few hours later?

Ironically, one of the guys from ThePirateBay is busy developing a payment solution like that. It's called "Flattr".
 
With an excellent service like DSTV, why would anyone want new series, movies etc. Ek meen wie wil nou nie heeltyd reruns ens. he?

I buy my games through Steam (now that i have uncapped) but i "demo" all my series and movies....
 
If the record companies in SA brought us/allowed iTunes at the reasonable prices and variety they get overseas, I'd actually buy music! I'm doing it with Steam...

Steam is the perfect example of how it should be done. I spend way more money on games than I used to, especially with their specials-of-doom.
 
R10 per mp3 makes no sense...for R100 you get 10 songs that you can't use as you like because of DRM.
When I used to buy CD's they were like R120-R160 each. Why would i pay R20 less for fewer songs and no case/artwork?
 
Google is tapping in with its Google TV ( http://www.google.com/tv/ )
It wont be long until there exist some intermediary, Google perhaps, that licenses digital content to ISPs for distribution.
 
If I could I would follow the rules but being ripped of on a constant basis by our broadcasters SABC and DSTV by saturating my TV screen with constant reruns, I have no choice but to go against my relative good nature and gooi a couple of torrents.

It's like when you braai chop's and the fatty meat gets all crispy and the fat itself just oozes with the unhealthy stuff's. We know that we shouldn't eat it but hell it tastes so nice.

What is that supposed to mean?
If anybody need to become more mature and grow up it is the distributors.
