HDMI gets CAT5e/6-based competitor

LG, Samsung, Sony Pictures, and Valens semiconductor team up to develop an all-in-one cabling standard to rival current HD cabling standards.

The HDBaseT Alliance describes itself as a "cross-industry alliance formed to promote and standardize the HDBaseT technology for whole-home distribution of uncompressed high definition (HD) multimedia content."
 
Looks like a good prospect. Might make running HDTV throughout a house from one decoder possible which would be awesome. No need for and stupid VGA or HDMI adapters is also a win.
 
Just makes sense. HDMI is good and all, but something that can span longer distances without having to fork out for every meter and cable composition is cool in my books.

So how do you know which cable goes where?

I'm sure there has to be more to it, but if you've got 3 monitors connetcted to a pc, a console and a dvr, how does it decide which signal goes out which monitor?

Sounds more like they want to push up the price of cheap components without really adding value to the components requiring the bandwidth.

Basically from the specs it seems like they will need to filter the standard ethernet traffic and then via other new tricks with modulation etc they can load a lot onto the previously unused spectrums available. So there likely will be a mac id too which would identify via networking but if the others are spectrum manipulations and standards then well.. identification and stuff like that could be anything from broadcast for certain things to routing like ethernet

Idea is that you could daisy chain through multiple devices (kind of like the old Token ring lot) or in a star config, bandwidth is around 10.2Gbps, with 100Meg ethernet, in theory it could support a couple of HD stream of 1.5Gbps (1920x1080) on a single cable. There's an addressing scheme that allows content directly from one device to another and naturally HDCP is still there...

me waits for the good 'ol home user to plug there favourite non-compliant device into the 100W power... the Thinkpad R51 is a classic example, plug it into a POE switch, and wait for the smoke...

You can get around this by using different cable colors.

*cough* HDMI is on its way out :p - don't let it get to you though, it often happens that one of us will have seen something and only afterwards one of you will then see it and post ...it's a numbers game, really.

That said, as much as I'm totally for this, I don't see myself being keen to bring my end-to-end GbE network down to 100TX just for 5play(tm) ..or have I totally got the wrong end of the stick here?
 
I should probably first go hunt down the spec before placing my gripe here... But if my gut feeling is right this is just the electronics companies trying to screw us over into re-buy all our AV equipments.

If they wanted to play nice... then don't shoe the manipulated HDMI features onto a CAT5 cable and connector to save licensing money. But rather use fricken standards...

1st. Put this port next to the HDMI port on new AV equipment... Don't force us to buy new every-things again... Let us get at less get 2 more years to pay for the HP on the current stuff people brought.

2nd. Use the CAT cable to carry video over a IP... not make it carry video over the raw 4 twisted pairs. Make the sending and receiving equipments ports IPv6 compatible. Use standards like DHCP plus uPnP for each device to detect and easily "Just Work" together. If they what to put power on the cable use the POE (power over ether) standard. And lastly... to keep the Hollywood beanies happy, put the usual crappy DRM inside a standard h.264 container and slap on the trusted computing hardware plus IPSEC transport layer security.
 
Zzzzz...we've reached the limits on copper wires. This only equals HDMI's bandwidth, not enough to be disruptive or relevant for long enough. Light Peak will blow this out of the water and scale much better in the future.

I want to know how they got those 100W into the cable to start with. Wiki says that the amp limit of Cat5 is 0.577A. So over 1 pair the voltage needs to be 174V; is it even legal to terminate a cable carrying 174V with a RJ45?

Secondly, what real advantage is there, to this system (other than cheaper cable), if not one existing switch works with it? Like kidcolt said, rather run the data over IP. It's widely adopted (understatement of the year), cheap, fast and managed. What's the problem.
