Anyone want to see the difference between shaped and unshaped ?

First 3 users to email me at [email protected] can play WoW on an unshaped account for the night.

Only condition is that you post the results of your experience here.

Offer expires @ 22:30 ;)

We apologize for this brief break in the advertising.

..To idly mention that a real showoff test of 'unshaped' would be some p2p usage. I'm sure online gaming improves - but the offer of unshaped to be used just for online gaming is like being lent a Porsche to go to the corner cafe to buy some smokes.
(It might be more fun to find out what unshaped is like for p2p/torrents - so anyone offered an unshaped account, should maybe do some experimenting with p2p/torrents while they have it..)

We have had a flurry of unshaped signups over the past few weeks - the majority of which have specified gaming as their reason for selecting an unshaped account.

The people who REALLY benefit from unshaped are the people who require the lowest latency possible.

Feel free to contact me should you wish to test an unshaped account with P2P.

I have a SAOL unshaped account since Tuesday (2 Aug). It is working great for international traffic.

LG WA lent me a unshaped account. Works great skype, wow etc.
As far as p2p on a well seeded torrent after 10 mins on shaped was running at 5 - 10KB/s
after 10 mins on an unshaped account was running at 35-45KB/s.
So their is no doubt that it works the only problem is at R125/GB its not worth it unless you cannot get what you want anywhere else as in a shop!

I agree that at the current prices, unshaped seems more suitable for active international traffic like gaming, skype, international VPN etc. It seems a bit steep to me for passive usage like P2P.

I received a test account and here is my results so far.
I played battlefield 2 on my axxess shaped account before and most of the UK servers returned a ping of 400 and more. Saol unshaped account I played on Uk servers that went down from a shaped 450ms to 290-310ms unshaped. Impressive. I was not kicked once by the admin of the servers which always happened when I was using a shaped account.
I played Counterstrike source on servers in the UK,Germany and France with pings ranging from 280ms to 310ms. With my shaped account the lowest ping on a server I could get was 450ms all the way up to 700ms.
I will try some international torrents next and give some feedback.

I wish I could afford one of these.

Tried some international torrents using bitcommet as my client.
Connected using an international torrent with 110 seeders and 11 leechers.
Connecting with the unshaped account my line connection was maxed out in the first minute dowloading at 52kp/s on my 384dsl line.
I disconnected and reconnected using my shaped account and starting the same torrent. It took longer to connect to the seeds and the max download speed I get is 20-30kp/s rising and dropping all the time.

This account should be ideal for people wanting to play international games like World of Warcraft,Eve online or Guild Wars. Using 4Gigs solely for the purpose of p2p would be stupid though except if you could afford it :D

I would be interested to know what other SAOL unshapped customers are getting on WoW. I average in the upper 400's with occasional drops to low 400's in low population areas. And then of course the odd spike (well not so odd of late) to 900.

NO D@MNIT! I was playing WoW not reading forums LOL.. I always seem to miss things like this!

Question if I may as I've heard some conflicting stories and I'm to lazy to check it up:

How will this effect us from the 1st November? Will the pricing still be the same?

I wnna try it but for telenet/text games.. i get a bit of lag on my shaped service and was wondering how much of a difference it makes even if for a few minutes. Currently the lag is there though not tremendous. Just wondering if its the line speed(192 for text should be fine i think) or shapping.

Sorry for taking so long to reply...had a busy day and such.

Anyway, I was lucky enough to be one of the three to try out an unshaped account last night, and all I can say is that all problems I had with gaming (Guild Wars) completely vanished, and my torrent download speeds increased quite a bit.

While I don't have the money to permanently subscribe to an unshaped service as the pricing currently stands, it really did help me isolate the source of my problems.

Thanx Pedantic :)

I think the unshaped accounts will be the least affected by the new pricing - if anything, we'll be able to provide smaller caps (to make it more affordable for gamers) - or even a bundle account including 2 usernames - 1 Gig unshaped + 5 Gig shaped.

Thinking aloud ;)
