NRF Releases R64 million for Broadband Fibre-Optic Link to the MeerKAT and SALT sites

The link will bring fast internet connectivity to the very remote site in the Northern Cape outside Carnarvon, where South Africa is building the MeerKAT and plans to construct the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope which South Africa is bidding for.
That sounds suspiciously like they are providing connectivity to a place that may or may not need it depending on SKA outcome.

One has to invest and take some risks. SALT needs such a link, should have been part and parcel of the construction of the telescope itself.

This is great news - the investment will drastically improve not only the chance for us to get SKA but also, through data accessibility, current research in Astronomy.

Not sure how he can "applaud the foresight of the NRF" in providing a link to SALT when the telescope was built several years ago - sounds more like hindsight to me.

I hope residents in Sutherland will also benefit from that link!

they are... and will be the first Gbps FTX linked community in the country. Go figure.

MeerKAT is going ahead, regardless of the SKA decision. If SA is awarded the SKA, MeerKAT will be expanded to become SKA. If not, we still have a pretty nice radio telescope in MeerKAT.
