DSL POTS Filter... WTF?! Halp! This thing looks deformed...

Bought a Belkin N150 DSL Modem/Router from Incredible Connection yesterday...
Includes a DSL Filter, but uhm....

Pics say more than I could.

That port for the Telephone plug and wall plug (pics 1 and 3) looks REALLY odd... am I missing something?

thats an overseas pots filter.
came with my netgear dgn1000 also
u need to buy a local one.its like R40
i told the person at matrix and he gave me a local one for free since i bought the router from him
mayb you should try asking them for a local one.complain why they sell a router with a oveseas pots filter

French to be exact. They even spelt "filter" the French way, instead of English.

just try and see.tell them on the box it says includes pots filter and you want the correct one
 
There are laws in SA governing the sale of goods with electrical plug sockets, I wonder if the same applies for telephone jacks?? Is it ICASA certified?
 
Incredible charge R99, Telkom charge R48.

It does have the ICASA certified sticker yes. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. Not sure about that law and all...

Yeah it is still sealed... soon as I opened the box and saw the weird plugs on it, I just let it be...
I sure intend to give them a hard time... now the only catch is, I gotta somehow get back to the mall again.
Hardly seems worth it to pay a taxi R45 per trip (so thats R90 for back home) just for a R45 socket...

Sux dammit!
I specifically checked all the packages for ICASA Certified and "Includes DSL Filter"... never thought it would come with the wrong damn filter!!!

THERE IS NO CAKE!!! ITS ALL A LIE!!!
 
The universe cut me some slack and had a friend call me to ask if I wanted to make a trip to the mall with him.

YAY! Don't need to get a taxi!

Stopped by incredible, swapped it for a Netgear DGN2000.

All set up and running... but I gotta say, its running quite warm. According to websites this seems common with this model, I just hope the little thing doesn't burn out 2 days after warranty expires...
 
I've only had netgear routers (gotta love lightning) and all of them came with a proper filter. If you want, you can just google up that standard, and just solder it straight to an RJ-11 plug. I doubt there's anything more complicated to it than that, the worst you could get is that they either use some messed up voltages/polarities or impedance mismatch. They are french though, so it's good to double check :p

Yeah thats normal. Mine does that too. It comes with the stand thingies though so that you can prop it up vertically. Theres a thread about the DGN2k somewhere here if you care.
 
my netgear came with an overseas pots filter i bought it from matrix

another corruption is hifi corruption lol
 
This Netgear DGN2000 from IC has the right filter, luckily.

Only problem I have with the Netgear right now, is that there is no way to disable it's WAN capabilities.
My DSL Line and ISP account will only be fully active as of beginning next month, so for now, I'm still chugging along with ICS and Vodacom.

ICS won't work for a damn with this Netgear, but thats another issue for another topic.
