iBurst review in Sunday Times

I've been thinking of getting a connection with iBurst for a while now , but i kept getting discouraged by the posts in this forum.Today(7th of August) I read a review of iBurst in the Technology Special Report,page 5 (that came with Sunday Times).The review was done by a Jason Krupp and he painted a different picture from the posts I see in this forum.He did mention though that getting hold of the helpdesk was a long wait but closes his review with the words
So , despite all the bragging about home broadband access,iBurst is the first real Internet offering that can wear the badge with pride-offering the quickest rollout and impressive speeds.Two thumbs up!

If it works then it works fast, but if you have problems then forget about getting help from wbs. :eek:

Even though at slow speeds it is still the fastest in sa. :p
 
Its fast no argueing that, provided your on a quiet tower and have found your "sweet spot"
 
What are the best speeds you guys get?Are P2P ports shaped?I use SoulSeek a lot(I'm still on ISDN [:(] ) and the highest DL speed I get when using SoulSeek is 15Kbs.
Besides being very expensive (am paying around 750 ) per month for connecting mainly on weekends (and sometimes in the week , during callmore time) , I get to download over 6G a month.I'm really considering getting iBurst.
 
well in my experience, getting 15kB/s off a p2p netowrk isnt possible on iBurst, but feel free to correct me. havent really been sharing much, trying to conserve cap so yea. i mostly use emule as well so that could be part of the issue.
 
np, honestly if your looking for p2p i would have to say that sentech or adsl would be a lot better. Sentech would probably be best if you intend to do large volumes, just make sure you read the sentech forums and accept the poor service etc before signing up ;)

their helpdesk support are useless
their reliability reminds me of my first car
their policies are nazi like
and their service at this point in time is worse then what i had at sentech...

Affirmative on all points.

I especially resent having to buy another gb of bandwidth to get a "normal" connection after being capped.
Without buying it, its like A 33.6 MODEM THATS NOT PLUGGED IN
Looks like your connected but you arent.

I haven't read the review, but there's the very real possibility that the "review" is actually an "advert" - it happens all the time.

iBurst simply pays for a favourable review.
 
Jeff here is the thing, Iburst give you a week to try it out, if you dont like it you can return it. The thing with iburst is you have to be in a "lucky" spot, and until you test it you are only guessing.
I have got adsl and iburst, i cannot tell you which is better they both have BIG problems. Surprisingly for me at least iburst outperforms adsl in latency sensitive application - wierd huh but that telkoms shaping for you. Generally adsl feels a bit nippier on web browsing etc as the dns seems much faster. Downloading probably averages out the same(http / ftp). P2P is DEAD on iburst unless you use a work around, on adsl its slow but generally you will get there eventually.
If you go for iburst tell yourself now, 3gb then hard cap, budget for that, if you are one of the lucky peeps who get there 64k after capped consider yourself lucky. It sucks i know but thats the reality and no amount of holding on the phone for the helpdesk will do a thing.
30gb accounts are a wonderfull thing but who knows whats in store for the future??

So either way you gambling at least the start up costs for adsl are much lower, so if Icasa caves in and adsl goes to poo then you have not lost too much.

Just stumbled on what I assume to be an accurate online reprint of the original article, can any confirm if this is a snippet from the same article this thread is about...?
Connecting to the service was as simple as installing the modem (a PCI card is available for laptop users), following the instructions, and registering with the helpdesk. No wires, no waiting, no fuss; although getting hold of the helpdesk was a long wait (though I was constantly being reassured that my call was important).

If this is the same article, then I don't think I would want to take broadband/IT advice from someone who doesn't know that a PCI and a PCMCIA card are not the same thing...:rolleyes:...if it was a Freudian Slip then my apologies...
 
I know Jason Krupp. And Jason has about as much technical savvy to write a review about a broadband product, as my dead grandmother has the savvy to solder a complicated pcboard together.
 
I agree with the abovementioned suggestions, try it out for a few days first before you commit, but if it works it great.

I've deployed iBurst at two offices and both are extremely happy with it, both have saved ove R4000 in dial up costs, and it's a lot cheaper (and better performance) for a small company than the Telkom 512 business ADSL.

The other thing to consider is that the cost of DSL HAS to come down, it just cannot stay this high. The question is how long will it take, and is it worth it to take a 2 year iBurst contract if ADSL does come down?
 
2 year iBurst contract? 2 year loan for the terminal. You could always give the terminal back...

Ditto on above. If it works, then it's great. I've had few hassles, and in the past 2 weeks I've actually spoken to helpdesk, had a call back :eek: and had service... but then maybe I'm just lucky.
 
One wonders if the reporter maybe got some gift or kickback - this product is a joke
