Zuma's nephew in booze row

President Jacob Zuma's high-flying nephew has been accused of reckless spending.

This follows his alleged splurge of R71 000 on expensive liquor during a jaunt for close friends in Durban - while 4 000 mineworkers he employs have not been paid for months.

More than 50 friends of Khulubuse Zuma were treated to premium alcoholic brands such as Johnnie Walker Blue Label whisky, Dom Perignon champagne and Remy Martin cognac in the exclusive VIP lounge of Durban's Egagasini Restaurant on Friday.

The venue, marketed as the "Heaven of Legends", boasts among its clientele national Police Commissioner Bheki Cele.

News of the lavish party comes as the Independent Democrats (ID) prepares to quiz Zuma on whether he played a role in the awarding of two lucrative oil blocs to Khulubuse - who chairs Aurora Empowerment Systems - in the Lake Albert region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

A source who attended the lavish party on Friday said Khulubuse Zuma arrived in a black Rolls Royce and, after the booze flowed, signed a cheque for R71 000.

But the management of Egagasini/Mondise MVG played down reports that he picked up the tab.

Confirming Khulubuse Zuma was a regular patron and was there on Friday night, operations manager Blessed Sithole said: "It is a lie that he spent R71 000.

"It was all on the house. I picked up the tab. We consumed alcohol worth R29 500 and meat worth R2 000."
