Right guys, have any questions? Submit your queries here.
Veteran World of Warcraft players, feel free to answer these questions here.
Guidelines: :)
1. Use clear headings so that we can surmise the nature of your question from the title.
2. Formulate your questions in a concise manner so as to avoid confusion and aid us in finding answers to your questions.
3. Know of good websites with FAQ about WoW? Please link us to it.
If I have the time and there is enough quality material to work with, I will summarise this thread in a shorter thread.
The main reason I am starting this discussion here is because of the many posts in this forum relating to the "How, when and where", "should. should nots and musts" of being a good SA World of Warcraft player.
Thx

Can I play it on local ZA server?
I played on the so called “local server” for a while whilst waiting for my WoW EU key to arrive from a buddy in the UK. If I can make a recommendation: don’t play on the local server. The difference between the stupid local server and the official WoW servers is huge! I think that playing on the local server would give you a bad first impression of WoW. Luckily I got to play a bit of the Open Beta before playing on the local server, and I was subsequently bitterly disappointed with the local server. It crashed continually and the in-game content just wasn’t right. I did not enjoy it at all.

What can be considered acceptable latency to play WOW?
P.S: Good idea Faille

Acceptable latency is a relative term, so the following is merely my opinion. When starting out a new character, latency is not such a big issue, since you’ll be fighting low-level monsters and the game just isn’t very micro-intensive as of yet. I’d say you will be able to play comfortably with a latency of up to 1500ms. The instant you start hitting higher levels and try out PvP and battlegrounds (BG), a latency of no more than 600ms is preferable.
The fact of the matter is, since we have about 350ms latency on a very good day, and the European players have latencies of 150ms or less, we’ll always be at a disadvantage. It’s so frustrating to fight an opposing faction player who has equal skill as you do, but because of his/her lower latency, he/she is able to wipe the floor with you due to better timed ability and skill use. With my lvl60 mage, I have participated in quite a couple of BG games, and it’s very annoying when: I see an enemy mage, start casting my silence spell, then see him casting his silence after me, and I still get silenced before him (silenced mage = peasant with fancy stick and robe). He then proceeds to turn me into a sheep and either leave me there for 50sec, or blow me up away with a pyroblast and combustion combination.
I have an unshaped ADSL account at SAOL, and I get an avg latency of 550ms, which I find very playable, in most cases.

Perhaps the questions should then be rephrased:
1. What can be considered acceptable latency when starting a new character?
2. What can be considered acceptable latency for PvP?
3. What can be considered acceptable latency for battleground?
4. What can be considered acceptable latency for raids?

Hi
I recommend that you stick to an ushaped ADSL connection if at all possible. I think it is worth every cent, as without it WOW just isn't WOW :D
From what I hear and experience you won't get a better deal than NukeCAP at the moment and that should guaruntee you an average latency of at least 500ms which suffices for PvE, which I am currently engaged in.
Since I am not yet seriously competing with other players, I cannot speak for PvP. I suppose there it's every last ms that counts! ;)
Please guys, don't be shy. Fulfil your darkest NooB fantasies and ask away! :p

Most important aspect of rpg's isnt really the ping, is more consistency and by all means, 0% packetloss with 800ms mean alot more than 400ms with bits of packetloss. The difference in gameplay, is huge.
The problem with telkom shaped adsl, even when its working right lets say 600-700ms at the better times, you get the occasional packetloss, specially in pvp/raids where more data than usually gets shaped and well this leaves you with only a few packets registering.. Thats why you will notice dramatic ping spikes on shaped adsl when doing battlegrounds/big combat fields as opposed to the marginal ping spike with unshaped access.

Hi, I live in the UK, my brother is in the western cape.
He has just gotten a connection with a small WISP and the first thing we thought was "lets play WoW together!"
After much wrangling he got a copy of the game and I registered my 10 day free trial, that you get with the retale version of the game, in his name.
But when we try to play he gets latencys of 15000+ms, (completely unplayable)
Is this likley to be because he is using a WISP ?

that's something to do with his connection.
adsl unshaped connection will be nice to play wow, but it costs you arm and leg...

Yes, very likely. It's sounds like the WISP in question is applying port shaping.

Haha, well considering that western cape is in SA it's extremely likely. Well personally I've experienced latencies of up to 18000ms (that's 18 SECONDS) on weekdays business hours.
Try after hours - it's much better.
Well now heres a story to share: one of my friends saw he's not going to make 90g by lvl 40 so he creates a macros which goes: /say 'Well hello kind sir. I'm a represantive of the 'his character name' charity fund. I live in far off country where internet connections are few and far between and kind of VERY BAD. The latency bug as of yet has caused a totaling amount of 17g to my equipment and the packet loss fiend has caused 43g to my equipment. If you could maybe help me repair the damage by donating to the 'his character name' fund it would be highly appreciated.'
Well quite original but I don't want to know on how many ignore lists he is or how many accounts got banned because of swearing at him. :o
