Netgear or Billion?

Please comment: Which is the best buy, the Billion 7202G or he Netgear DG 834GTUK ?
Please advise re problems etc with either product?
 
I own a Netgear DG834GTUK and am very happy with the unit. It provides you with a highly configurable hardware firewall, an ADSL modem that can be upgraded to ADSL2, a 108 Mbit Wifi compatible wireless access point as well as a 4-port router at 100Mbit/s..

You can remote configure if you want, and it can be set up to update a dynamic IP service to give you some sort of a fixed IP (which comes in handy since most Telkom ADSL offers change your IP each 24 hours)...

If you start using a Netgear DG834GTUK, immediately upgrade the firmware to .25 or higher - this drastically improves your connection stability..

One backdraw - it looks really ugly :-) (with 3 mirror faces and numbered multicolour LAN activity indicators).. So stick it behind your wallpaper and you'll be surfing without problems..

Lastly, Netgear is distributed by Duxbury, and they give you good support... (no not working there)
 
Why not compile an excel like type comparison matrix for locally available adsl routers ?
Comparing options, features, upgradebillity, ease of use and dealer price.
Makes : Dlink Netgear Marconi Billion Cisco 3com Draytek Smc Asus etc..

One major drawback with a billion router - you cannot remove the antenna it ships with.
 
im using a netgear, so far so good. heard that the Netgear Modems can give a lot of problems in Hot areas.
but its winter at the moment, so I don't know about that!
 
The Billion 7202G is a great product at an attractive price. It supports VLAN, QoS, proper URL filtering, MAC address filtering, etc!

I've got the Billion 7202G for 2 weeks now and I am very impressed. It was definitely a very good buy! It already supports ADSL2+, and it autoconnects to ISP when they change the IP. Also supports DynDNS, so now I can access my router from anywhere in the world without knowing the IP. It also comes in black which fits in nicely with a black finished PC.
It has a lot of other great features that the Netgear don't have. Also comes with a 2 year warranty to Netgear's 1 year!

I bought my 7202G from DP last week, if only I'd known about the discount :P

So far so good. Setup was a doddle and I'm rocking. Wired connection gets a sub 30ms ping to the games.saix.net, so I'm happy. Wireless is also pretty good, I had more trouble setting up my HP laptop.

So I'm 100% happy with the purchase. I chose the billion because it was significantly cheaper and has pretty much the same features. I can't really speak on behalf of the netgear but, it does support "Turbo G" 108, the billion doesn't, but if you internet connection only runs at 512k you won't notice the difference.

1. MWeb ships the netgear in the Big black box
2. Web Africa supplies Billion Modems

3. They both have local support.

4. The Netgear looks like a '50's UFO
5. The Billion looks like a mini Snackwich toaster
 
I've had my Netgear DG834GT for about 2 weeks now and have had no problems whatsoever.... certainly recommended. ;)

dlink, netgear, billion - aren't they really all the same ?!?!?!?!? Browse their websites and they have all the same products - ADSL, VOIP, etc. - I wouldn't be surprised if they all came from the same factory in China.....

AFAIK, NetGear is just re-branded TexasInstruments internals - not sure about the others. I've been a NetGear fanboy since I got by DG834 wired router - its awesome.
 
Got the billion 5102 4port router and havent had any problems at all, was a pleasure to setup and was so easy to use,and it looks pretty nice too (black), and its quite compact. And the price is good too. Also bought mine frm digitalplanet.

No more ... in the DG834GT model they are now using a Broadcom platform just like Linksys and Billion and seemingly everybody else.
 
hi voip is a fast growing technology.Thousands of companies are investing multimillion dollars for the inprovment and i hope we will see by next ten years the decrease call charges by75% specialy for long distance calls.
but i am wondering why south african technology is not growing hand in hand with globe.
To ask you :How many voip providers have branches in south africa besides skype?
