I have a XP machine here which I set up just for file sharing purposes - basically installed XP (and drivers etc) and setup file sharing on a big harddrive. I then also loaded Kaspersky AV (updated every 5 hours, scanned every 12 hours) and also Spybot - Search & Destroy.

Working on the "file server" via remote desktop, I realised a few days ago the machine's clock is wrong and "losing hours". Checked back in a few days time (after correcting time) and it's wrong again.

This afternoon, all of a sudden I cant access my mapped drives and decide to investigate. Ping the file server and the first packet returned the correct IP address, second packet returned my own machine's IP address, other 2 packets failed..

So I decide to hook up the file server with a k/board, mouse & LCD and see pc is hanging. Force shutdown the file server and reboot... it runs through the POST process, asks me to boot normally or in Safe Mode or Last Known Configuration - no matter which one I select, just before the first XP splash screen comes up, it reboots back to the POST process - it just wont boot into XP.

Considering the fact that the clock was always wrong, it replied with weird ping results and wont bring up the initial Windows loading screen, what would you blame this on? Remember at some stage I saw a brief BSOD before it rebooted again.. Couldnt see the error message though..

I dont have the facilities to test the m/board, CPU and RAM (can put harddrive in external enclosure), and dont want to lose the info on the harddrive. Harddrive probably newest component in the box, rest of the hardware is from "some old pc".

Any ideas?

Push F8 when the machine boots, and select the option to disable auto restart on BSOD. You can then get the BSOD error.

Ahh didnt think of that.. Will check that out during the course of today, hope its a RAM module or something small.. dont feel like replacing the whole thing :/
