What Touch screen phone do you suggest I buy?

So I'm looking into buying a brand new cellphone in cash and I'm planning to buy one in about 3 months time. I've decided that I want a touch screen phone, I don't like blackberry type phones because I personally find it difficult to type since I have large hands and therefore large fingers. I'm currently using a cheap Nokia phone (have no idea what it's named) which I bought for R350 at Vodacom for cash, my Sony Ericsson W850i is not working anymore :(.

I want a phone which I will use for the following reasons:
- Make phone calls and receive messages :D
- Listen to music
- Surf the net at high speed
- Take pictures socially
- Navigation (not important at all, I can do without this function)

So, what phone do you suggest I buy? My budget is R4000.

I have one (as a secondary phone) and personally I think it's an irritating device. Just my opinion. Maybe I haven't given it enough time to grow on me yet. I've always been a Nokia fanboi though.
 
Why not the 5230? I was looking at it to replace my wife's old phone as the prospect of free navigation with Ovi Maps seems a good one.

Tbh, I haven't actually used the Ovi Maps properly yet. It was the main reason I got the phone. It's the first Nokia touch screen I've used and I just find it irritating. As I said in my previous post, maybe I haven't given it enough time to grow on me yet. I've found it does this odd thing by randomly flipping the screen into 'horizontal' mode even though I'm not holding the phone sideways. There's also a brand new sim in it and it has that little msg box flashing all the time saying my sim memory is full yet there are no contacts or sms' on the phone yet. IMO it also feels very flimsy and plastic. I'm just comparing it to a history of using Nokia's and for some reason it does not seem 'right'.

Oh and this is the 7th Nokia I've had in the last 10 or so years.

Had a Nokia 5800 which is similar to the 5230. Would not recommend. Crappy touch interface, I also found it annoying to use.

Android phones have a good interface. I suppose the latest high-end stuff like the Samsung Galaxy S is out of your budget? R5600 to import one from the UK. Maybe the HTC Desire is cheaper but it's not a great music phone, poor sound quality based on what I've read (as with all HTCs apparently).
HTC Hero and Legend should be within your price range. Besides the sound quality they are very good phones.

You know why Nokia gave out Ovi Maps Navigation for free? Because nobody would pay for that s**t! Well that's my guess. The navigation itself is decent but the routes it picks can be downright ridiculous sometimes and the search feature is a joke even when it searches online.

You can get free navigation on Android phones with the hack for Google Maps Navigation that removes the region-locking. See here:

It requires the phone to connect to the internet and a little bit of airtime though.

Yep,stay the F*** AWAY from touchscreen Symbian NOKIAs, cant believe how i fell for the 5800,at 1st i loved it but as time went by it became annoying,its not a bad phone but the UI is just so inconsistant,buggy and clunky. I would recommend the HTC Tattoo now as well, also look at the HTC Magic and HTC Hero if you can get them at around R4000, im sure the Hero has dropped in price now that the Legend is out, i would HIGHLY recommend the Hero,it may mean having to spend quite a bit more,but it will be worth it. :)
 
NOT a Nokia 5230.

I would not suggest this as it has Resistive touchscreen and not capacitive.

I am lucky enough to have me an HTC Desire and this is the phone I would recommend although it is slightly out of your price range, it might come down a bit though.

Seems like a lot a people have suggested an HTC phone. Is the HTC Desire also a good music phone? Is the sound any good?
 
I have a Nokia X6. Same bland Symbian OS and not the best processor&memory in comparison with the HTC's. But so far I've had not problems with it,quite happy. the 32GB storage is a plus. (I don't know for how much they retail though).

It is pretty good as a music phone, hey.

I would say that the iphone is sill better in terms of sound and the ease of use when it comes to music, but not by a mile. The HTC Sense music player is very nice.
And you can just copy all your albums to the MicroSD and you're ready to go
 
HTC it is, will look into those phone brands closely. But aren't there other phone brands that are as good as an HTC or an iphone? I don't want a touch screen Nokia phone. What about Sony Ericsson touch screen phones?
