All joking aside - is there anything the general public can do to fight this ban?

It looks like it is going to go through without even a murmur of objection.

Very scary path to be heading down ....... way too much obsession with censorship lately from government.

"Despite recent amendments of the law and other efforts to stop the devastating effect on children of their access to pornography, it's not enough," FPB legal affairs manager Dumisani Rorwana said in a statement on Thursday.

What devastating effects? Some examples please. When I was a kid and was lucky enough to chance upon some porn I found it extremely um... educational.

They want to ban porn but legalize prostitution?

Yoh.

And this is one of the MOST Important things to have - press freedom. They point to CHINA, IRAN AND SAUDI ARABIA as examples???

I can't believe this, it's insane.

Countries of ban

Looking at the other coutries who banned porn i.e. China and UAE it no suprise SA wants to do the same. Did anyone notice that our country is partly ruled by communists (ANC's coalition partner). {sarcasm intended}.

No wonder government wants to control everything

Government should stay the hell away from censorship. I'm not saying porn is good. But this is turning into an apartheid style government. First FICA, then RICA now this crap. What's next? Are we going to allow them to tell us what to eat or where to take a dump? Freedom of choice. And right to privacy.

Similar programmes to safeguard children from pornography were currently in place in China, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

You have got to be mother****ing kidding me! If they're so concerned about the right of children how about focussing on lowering rape/abuse and fixing the crumbling education system.

There could be a devastating effect on children if they had access to [car keys / firearms / alcohol / power tools / un-manned swimming pools / tobacco / hazardous chemicals] as well. So what's their point?

Age restrictions are there for a reason.

So would would be the point of having interwebs then? lol

So I as a adult would not be allowed to looks at dirty pictures no more? Surely this can not be allowed to happen in a democratic country.

Again....parents, it is time for you to take responsiblity for your f'ing offspring! Stop giving them multimedia capable phones, stop allowing them to watch late night TV. DSTV has got parental control. Web Browsers have got settings you can change to block porn. Netnanny or watever its called can help you with this. Stop being f'ing lazy and take responsiblity. If I want to look at porn as a adult...that is my choice.....urg.

@ Guavamint....this is not your decision to make for me! Whats next...you gonna start tellming me who I can and can not sleep with?

Gigaba would now meet with his counterparts at Cabinet level to determine where the bill would best fit.

I could suggest a few places.

I have no need for internet porn, so in principle I don't really care if it gets banned or not, apart from feeling that it should be each user's right to choose what he downloads.
I am curious though.... perhaps one of u internet/network gurus can advise.... how do u filter porn content? Aside from an obvious porn site IP address... does porn pictures or videos have different ip packets than 'normal' pics/videos? Does a 'beaver' shot have different protocols/packets than a beaver (rodent animal) picture? Does a pic of hot naked chick transfer differently to a dog ugly old woman's pic?
Or raunchy making-woopee video different to Barney & Co?
Or is gov expecting somebody at ISP to check each file, like the old pervs in gov who used to watch porn movies to see if its OK for distribution to the public?

+1. Porn is there for a reason, and as far as I'm concerned, young adults SHOULD stumble across it? Some parents are hesitant to educate their children, and porn does the job perfectly. It has a purpose - the government must back off with this censorship. I download what I want from the internet - I pay for unrestricted access to the entire network.

While I do not agree with censorship there are many who will need it when it comes it pornography

You're a blathering idiot. Which countries have the strongest female rights? The ones with the most pornography. What happens when you introduce pornography into a country where it didn't previously exist? Sex crimes go down.

What people DON'T need is a government of scowling paternalists who believe they have all the answers, shredding our hard won freedoms, and all in the name of a cause THAT THEY WILL DAMAGE IF THEY SUCCEED.
