What would you want to pay for ADSL

I was wondering what everyones expectations are for ADSL pricing, when are we "happy"?
(Trick question: we never are ;) )

All inclusive, over and above the cost of POTS line rental.

I was thinking along the lines of:

Uncapped local, Unshaped, soft cap on international traffic.
(speed / usage)

Customer controlled sliding scale for speed and usage i.e:

R50/Mbps per month
R10/Gb per month

E.g.:


R100: 512kbps 10Gb / 1Mbps 5Gb
R200: 2Mbps 10Gb / 512Kbps 15Gb
R250: 4Mbps 5Gb / 1Mbps 20Gb
R350: 1Mbps 30Gb
R500: 8Mbps 10Gb / 1Mbps 45Gb

And as far as shaping goes, I'd institute a "trust first" port shaping. If particular illegal download channels are clogging the pipes, then I would shape.

Your proposal sounds good to me. Unfortunately we are still far away from those prices in SA.
 
R 100.00 rand a month for a 512, 384 or 192 line [It's the exact same line, hardware + other stuff].

A connection to an ISP of your choice.
For local bandwidth - to play BF2, I want an ISP to gimme a local contract at R 50 a month, no cap, no shaming.
For international bandwidth, there it depends:
A - Browsing + FTP + Email - R 100 a month, no caps but can be shaped.
B - VPN -> UK (Garauntee'd throughtput of 54kbs) - R 200 a month.
C - VPN -> USA (Garauntee'd throughtput of 54kbs) - R 200 a month.
D - VPN -> DENMARK (Garauntee'd throughtput of 54kbs) - R 250 a month.
E - VPN -> UK (Garauntee'd throughtput of 27kbs) - R 80 a month.
F - VPN -> USA (Garauntee'd throughtput of 27kbs) - R 80 a month.
G - VPN -> DENMARK (Garauntee'd throughtput of 27kbs) - R 135 a month.

NO CAPPING. IT's BULL. If the user is not applying acceptable use policies to their use of the ISP's service, then punish that user, don't go and punish everyone.

Why would transferring data over port xyz "clog the pipes" more than transfering the same amount of data over port 80? There should be no shaping at all - it only makes sense if the accounts are completely uncapped!

To answer your question realistically: I would be happy with 512kps/30gb for less than R500 (ALL inclusive including phone line). This size cap makes it usable and affordable for a family or a small business and a couple of hours usage per day. I might go for a cheaper option and lower speed - but same cap and no shaping!

If they want to introduce per gig billing, then there should be no rental per line speed since you paying per usage. Telkom would race to try get faster and faster speeds to us (more speed would lead to more usage). They win, users win!. Personally I would be tempted to go for this option if it was R20 per gig and speeds upwards from 1Mbps
 
What I'd consider to be realistic, and a good compromise between Telkom and ICASA, for the next year is:

a) Half the ADSL line rental (e.g. HomeDSL192 = R135)
b) R15/GB
c) Drop phoneline rental if you don't need it.
d) Shape P2P (warez) to an extent (50% of the line capacity), but not Skype etc.

Afterwards:

a) Half the ADSL line rental again (-R70) and make it part of the ISP subscription.
b) R10/GB
c) Shape to 75% of the line capacity

Way in the future: ;)

a) R250 all inclusive.
b) 30GB cap
c) No shaping
d) 512 Kb/s minimum speed

i'd be happy paying exactly what I paid in the UK 3 years ago while there is no competition in the ADSL arena and then benefit from price decreases as the market opens up to competition....

I paid £8 a month for my ADSL line rental (which included my fixed linephone, same line same price, no duplication of charges) so at todays exchange rate R92.50 a month for an unshaped, uncapped 512 service.

Then I would like to be able to choose my ISP. I would like to pay the same as I did in the UK...uncapped at £19.99 month which included 50Meg server space for personal web pages, and 3 email accounts. so at todays exchange rate R230.50.

That would bring my total cost of a 512 service to R323.00 = affordable!! fair!!

Not 1c more than R300 p/m for 512 with 30GB cap. (All inclusive. Breakdown would be R100 for line rental which includes your phone line rental + R200 for ISP charge for 30GB.)
For those who need more bandwidth, additional GB's should be charged at no more than R10 per GB.

Obviously uncapped would be ideal, but thats being very unrealistic at this time.
 
Realistically, I'd be initially happy with R300 all inc. for 30gig/512

I'm aware that we don't have the same market as the UK, in terms of buying power, so we will never see the same prices, unless the entire country gets ADSL, which is about as likely as Bob giving land back to white farmers.

Asking for anything less, in the next few years anyway, is unrealistic.

We're seeing progress - ADSL will fall under the R500 (all incl.) mark soon, although that's for a 192 line, 3gig.

Still a long way to go !
 
Some nice suggestions, I like the idea of buying a "throttle" rather than a cap.

The reason I ask is really to set a benchmark expectation. We all go on about wanting more for less, but I want to quantify that.

I also want to cry Snoopy_Inc. I'm a new ADSL user, only 192, but it's like a drug, one taste and you can't be without it. I pull my hair out when I see NTL offering 10Mbps & 75Gb cap for £30, but I realise it'd be unrealistic to expect ICASA to force Telkom to offer something like that.

Remember guys, QOS (shaping) is something that all bandwidth providers employ on a contended service. The difference between here and overseas is that bandwidth overseas never gets saturated enough for QOS to really kick in and thus users generally perceive they're receiving maximum speed on all protocols. I'm guessing Telkom don't want to release contention ratios because they're HORRIBLY over-contending the service.
 
Ideally I would want to pay a max of R300 for 1mbps/no cap. In this country with telkom running things it's just a dream.

Just got back from 5 years working in the UK. So much nicer in SA!!! Yipee!!!, and then I hit the Telkom wall - one of my previous posts explain what I went throug with them, at least now I have ADSL, but only after getting everyone from ICASA to Cart Blance, etc involved.

Your questtion was 'What would you want to pay for ADSL?'. Althoug I know this is day-dreaming - I would'nt mind having the same package here as the one I had in the UK: Wait for this.......

£29 (R 330) for a 8 meg line (phoneline rental inc) - no shaping - unlimited, and the best of all - unlimited local and national calls free. The same package cost £17 without the unlimited calls. Those were the days.

Like I said that is what I want to pay, but by no means expect to pay.

I agree mostly with ideas mando had suggested in another thread. Price should be based purely on line speed with no hard cap. Maybe a soft cap for users who continuously max out their connection.
So,
DSL192 = Max. 62 GB/month @R250
DSL384 = Max. 124 GB/month @R350
DSL512 = Max. 165 GB/month @R500
DSL1024 = Max. 330 GB/month @R700

Telkom could keep the R92 line rental for maintainance and upgrade of the copper between your property and the exchange, but drop the ADSL line rental and use a portion of profits from the supply of bandwidth packages above for maintainance/upgrade of the ATM network. Also no shaping and prioritisation.

I know, wishful thinking :) But one can dream...
