a buddy of mine complained a while ago about some sort of virus or method used that when he receives a missed call, after a short while his contract usage would sky-rocket. He complained with Vodacom, they apparently investigated the issue and traced the different numbers to IP addresses, but they where unable to stop it from happening.
When his contract expired, he took his number and made it pre-paid, not loading airtime on it for some time. The missed calls stopped. Couple of weeks ago, it started happening again, his R110 airtime would just vanish within a couple of minutes. He did some research on the net and found a virus remover, sent an SMS which cost him R7.50 and a couple of minutes later he received a file to install that apparently blocks the so-called virus.
I have no idea what application it is, but I did see it in action. He received a missed call, it rang once and stopped, then a second or two later, this messagebox popped up on the phone and stated that the missed call was an attempted attack and that the virus was successfully removed. Ever since installing the app, he has never had any more airtime funds going missing.
Now, the reason I in detail state the above is:
1) I want to know what sort of virus is able to do this.
2) My buddy cannot remember where he got that specific app from or to what shortcode he sent the message, does anyone know of this app/anti-virus.
3) This recently started happening to my employer, missed call on vodacom contract and she rarely phones with the cellphone and the bill for the last 3 months have increased an average of R800. Has this happened to anyone else?
