UniForum South Africa looks back on 22 years

I think I killed more than a few brain cells reading that article...

Looks like the registration process hasn't changed in 22 years either.

Why does this read like a Uniforum "We don't suck, really" press release?

Today, about 95% of the total registrations in the .ZA top level domain are to be found in the co.za domain.

Because za.net has never attained the status of a professional service and your alternatives after that are... what exactly?

So basically the article goes: UniForum South Africa looks back on 22 years... and discover nothing has changed. They're still the cheapest and best co.za provider in South Africa. Just like Telkom are the #1 fixed line provider.

Well their website still looks as if it was made in 1988

Probably as it takes them frigging yonks just to update a MODIFY request...

Uniform has failed miserably in one very important area. They should do a lot more in informing the TRUE owners of Domain names of their rights. I see far too many ISP's, webhosting companies and or web design companies, that register domain names in their own name instead of the Client name. If ever later the client wants to claim rightfull ownership of the domain name, Uniform just shrugs their shoulders and say there is nothing they can do. The clients are then held hostage by these unscrupulous companies without having the means to go through very expensive procedures to reclaim their domain name ownership and move their hosting to another provider. There should be a checklist that Uniform require in order to make sure every party involved know what it means when someone's name is on the 2a line details.

It was given the responsibility of administering the CO.ZA domain name space in 1995 because it not only had the technical skills to do so but was also committed to neutrality and unity of purpose.

and indeed they locked onto the 1995 mentality and stayed there. UNIFORUM is the worst company in South Africa with the crappiest Noah's Ark system & dumbest helpdesk.

And their popular quote "WE DONT GET INVOLVED".

I've spend MONTHS with police forms & ownership verifications because their dumb staff cock up, but... but... "WE CANNOT HELP, WE DON'T GET INVOLVED - THE END THANKS OKAY BAAI, *HANGS UP*". BUT it is because of THEM! Such a nice excuse when you mess up and just tell your client "we don't get involved".

I still use them and it works fine for me.
And, there does not seem to be a heck of a lot of people around stealing domain names before you get a chance to officially register them like what happens with .com / .net and .org.

I frankly prefer the existing system, a change to the new instant system will include the nasties that go with it.

But, regarding ownership issues, people say that their rights must be explained by Uniforum.
The catch is that, people who get caught out by nasty isp's have also never heard of uniforum, and, is Uniforum the right agency to resolve such disputes?

How many domains do you manage? Sounds like under 100. Manage 1000 domains then give me an opinion on how you feel about their systems.

I put clients emails on as registrant then I continually have to put them at ease when doing a domain update or something. Annoying... Also what are they doing emailing your client anyway?

Pretty terrible and outdated registration system, slow support and many other little issues that shouldn't exist. Domain entry has to exist before being able to register anyone? Really wish a company that took domain registration serious would take over .co.za, I'd be happy to pay extra.
