yes it can. are you getting 3g coverage? what happens if you manually select 3g only?

good thing on the Nokia 6680, just below the signal bar indicator it shows 3G if in a 3G coverage area, if yours aint showing anything, youre probably picking up EDGE or GPRS.

I have had a chance to play briefly with 3G in Durban and CT airports.
It's pretty snappy -- although you don't notice the speed so much in
casual web surfing as there are the usual name resolution delays
and connection startup times that are the biggest overheads when
opening a lot of short-lived connections.

It seems to me that when you start downloading a bigger object (and
I'm only talking a couple 100 KB, here), the connection starts up and
seems to speed up gradually and get to max speed -- I got 360Kbps
in Durban and a peak of 400Kbps (a bit optimistic, the graph on KPPP)
in CT.

The only caveat -- the 3G speed makes it possible to spend your
money a lot faster...generally during casual surfing, GPRS+ is way
cheaper than the charges you would pay for on-line time to Telkom
for dialup...but I recall doing a 5 minute check of a couple of quick
news sites, email and blogs from CT which clocked a few MB in
just a few minutes.
