10 Mbps ADSL upgrades: ISPs talk about their plans

Just hope they don't make the 10meg uncapped accounts so cheap that they cant afford the appropriate backhaul.
 
Hold on to your underwear and G strings ladies and gents......Mweb will be announcing their 10 Mb uncapped, its gonna be a striptease !!!!
 
I doubt that I will ever get an uncapped 10 Mbps service due to the cost and the fact that I think that I'll struggle to reach 10GB usage a month.

I am, however, very interested to see how prices are influence for the 4096kbs and the promising 1024 kbs options.

Afrihost’s Greg Payne also confirmed that their capped products are 10 Mbps ready, and while they definitely plan to offer 10Mbps uncapped solutions, they do not have any time frames or pricing information yet.

After being one of the pioneers to trigger off meaningful competition in the capped segment, they seem to be lagging a bit in the uncapped arena :(

I will be looking at uncapped by year end and was hoping to do this with AfriHost, but will have to see.

In general, I find it somewhat strange that ISP's are not yet ready with their uncapped products to offer 10 Mbps alternatives. Surely it was something that they would have seen coming and made plans accordingly? Or maybe I just don't understand how things work in their ballgame.

You will find that anybody who resells IS uncapped will be "lagging" a bit.
 
My God, I wish people would stop referring to "uncapped" as being uncapped, when clearly it isn't. Somebody needs to take this up with the ASA. If the service is interfered with in any way it can't be termed "uncapped". To do so is false advertising.
 
is telkom catching the ISP's unprepared? i would think they would have made up their minds already as this upgrade has been in the pipeline for a while. or are they all reselliing IS, and waiting for IS to give direction first? so was IS unprepared then?
 
I took my business from Afrihost, I did 34gb and my 4096 line speed went to 512k..... a very sad uncapped product...

My account from Mweb(Openweb) 1000X better.....

But you were not capped though... hence the term 'uncapped'. Capped is when you have a 0kbps download speed- (like back in the days of capped accounts when you hit your cap) as opposed to your being throttled to 512k - which to most people is a decent enough connection. Not everyone tries to download the entire interwebs in one week... which is why Afrihost stresses that you need to be sure their uncapped is suited to your needs. Sigh! Leechers of teh interwebs need to get out moar!

Have had Afrihost uncapped for months now and have never been capped. Does this mean I have an uncapped account which is not really an uncapped account even though I never have been capped considering it is an uncapped account? Define uncapped bearing in mind the service provider's TOS and not your own definition. Flame away!

it is advertised as a 4 mbps uncapped product. Whether you cap... or whether you drop the speed. The end result is the same. The product does not perform as advertised. False advertising is false advertising. And it has nothing to do with leechers or downloading the whole interwebs. I have five people in my house/family who are all very active on the internet. I need an uncapped product to perform like an uncapped product... not like some fake false mislabeled product. You need to get out more and realise that there are other people out there in internetland who (1) know how to use the internet better than you do and (2) have different online needs than you do. Stop defending the ISPs who are ripping off consumers. None of us win when they do that.

"Uncapped" means ...

1) being able to download as much as your line physically allows
2) during the advertised hours of the product
3) at the speed the product is listed at.

If it can pass all three of those criteria then it qualifies as "Uncapped".

Anything short of that... and you are being lied to.

In other words - cheap uncapped (with FUP) is completely unacceptable in SA. Only the business-grade accounts are acceptable. I disagree with this sentiment.

If you cut my line off in the middle of the month because I used too much data, and keep it cut of until next month, it is capped.
 
Just saw this on Openweb's uncapped product page regarding pricing for 8MB uncapped. I know they resell MWEB accounts, so if this is the indicative price, then its fair to say its from MWEB. Uncapped 8MB for R989

If that is the price, and know how MWEB shapes 4MB uncapped during after hours so badly, then wouldnt the 384 uncapped express+ accounts from Axxess be better? They are priced at R899 and i know they dont shape as badly as MWEB.

The product itself is not unacceptable. Just the terminology. There is obviously a place in SA for such a product, if it was labeled correctly. But they could save themselves a lot of headaches and bad PR if they just dropped the "uncapped" terminology which is confusing people so much. Why should they have to kill the product? Why not just label it correctly? Save the "uncapped" term for those products that are truly uncapped and use some creative thinking to come up with another title that is more descriptive of this product and who it is aimed at. Simple common sense really. I don't get why you think the product is unacceptable in SA?
