SMS over GPRS

On my phone (Nokia 3200 (I wasn't in a right state of mind when I chose it I kno :( )) it has the option to send SMS's over GPRS.. what's the diff betewen this and just sending it 'normally'??? :confused:
 
It is the just the transmission mode for the SMS, it is either GSM or GPRS.

There is not a price difference for an SMS.

That is actually ridiculous how we are being overcharged for SMSs.

Lets take the an example of a SMS of 160 characters @ 80 cent.

This works out to over R5000/MB !!!!!! Compare this to the out-of-bundle rates of GPRS of R2/MB.

There is an option for now. You can use MxIt. If you have a Java-enabled phone you can download the app at http://www.mxit.co.za/wap.
 
Yeah but like is there any difference what so ever if I send SMS over GPRS or GSM? Will it benefit me in anyway what so ever (e.g. faster delivery times etc) ???
 
no, an sms is so small, it will make do difference, just rather stay with gsm when sending sms's, why would you want an sms to be sent faster??? It only take 2 secs anywayz! I find MXIT really sucks! I downloaded a proggy call agile messenger, i am using a 6600 tho, the proggy connects 2 MSN, AIM, YAHOO and 1 more, cant remember the other 1, although MXIT can also connect to msn, i find agile is alot more simple, i stay connected 24/7 and with agile u can send pics and everything making it even cheaper than an MMS!
 
I've always found that sending an sms over GPRS to be a rather difficult thing to get to work consistently. One day it works, the next it doesn't. This may just be a Vodacom thing, if V3G could comment on this it may shed some light on whether Vodacom actually supports sms over GPRS.

The reason that this is nice is that it actually takes about 6 seconds to send a sms over GSM and only about 2 seconds over GPRS. This is useful if you are wanting to send many messages to many recipients using a computer and a connected phone. This makes sense for the small business that doesn't have the volume requirements of the bulk sms services and wishes to save some money by using the sms only style contracts.

Thing with Agile is that you need a Symbian phone, so MXit works on more phones... and with IM it's all about your contacts.

I tried MXit but it just hangs on the 'registering' screen - had to reboot the phone to kill it...
 
Sending via GPRS would obviously be cheaper to as you are just paying for the data used which is very small....??? I think.. read this somewhere..

Don't think so - I had a proggie in my 7650 Nokia days that could send SMS over GPRS and it did not want to work - its all about costs - much cheaper to send via GPRS - the data costing as opposed to the per message costing.
 
One reason why SMS is more expensive than normal data download is SMS works on a store and send mechanism. If you send an SMS it get stored on a server and the recipient get polled until a successful send occurs. This is apparently the costly bit to the SP.

Please call me's etc. are free because there are no store and send involve, if the recipient can not be reached when you send the message tough luck.
