3G connection to 56k Dial-up modem

We've got a 56k modem connected to a machine in the office (no comment regarding security issues!). We connect from home to this machine with dial-up modem to download data. Would it 1) be possible to connect via 3G to this modem and 2) get any benefits from faster download than going the telkom route i.e. 56k modem to 56k modem, 3) how would one set up such a connection?

I would assume you mean connect from a remote 3G device to the (?)server. What server, what OS?

If you want to get 3G speeds, you would need the server to be on a 3G connection, not dialup, otherwise you would at any rate be confined to the dial up UPLOAD speed (~33K if I remember correctly).

So, short answer, 3G card on server, some way of knowing the server IP address (dyndns.org for eg), and a 3G connection on the remote side. Remote connects to internet cloud, logs onto server using VPN, ssh, FTP or whatever, and downloads. Problems? No firewall protection against unknown ip addresses, since the remote client has dynamic ip.

Option 2? ADSL on server, 3G client side. Same problems / solutions as option 1

Option 3? What is the primary access to the internet? Diginet? 64kb/128kb? more? Same as option 1 and 2 except for the server ip address (now static).

gerkot, you cannot connect directly from a 3G data connection (card or phone) directly to the modem on the office machine.

You'll need to connect the office system to the internet, either via a fixed line (ADSL) or with a 3G data card.

Remote systems can then use 3G cards to connect to this system. Using VPN software can secure the link for you.

It's important to first make sure how much data you want to transfer in which direction. Remember the upload speed of 64K.

Basically you install the app. on the server and client pcs. Your email account becomes a type of 'middle-man' where everything is pushed through. From there it becomes a virtual FTP-site as you can create accounts for different people etc etc.

Yeah it is by "invitation", drop me an email and I will send you an invitation from my GMail account - same goes for other forumites .
