South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has proposed a plan to reunite his country with North Korea and suggested a tax to prepare for the costs expected, if the two countries come together, South Korea's state media said Sunday.

"Today inter-Korean relations demand a new paradigm," Lee said in a speech to mark the 65th anniversary of Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule, Yonhap reported.

Lee said the two countries should form a "peace community" and stressed the importance of the denuclearization of North Korea, Yonhap reported. He added that inter-Korean exchanges are needed to help build North Korea's economy, according to Yonhap.

"It is imperative that the two sides choose coexistence instead of confrontation, progress instead of stagnation. The two of us need to overcome the current state of division and proceed with the goal of peaceful reunification," Lee said, according to Yonhap.

The president's Grand National Party took a beating in recent local elections, which analysts see as a referendum on his response to the sinking of a South Korean warship.

The South Korean naval ship Cheonan sank March 26, killing 46 sailors and raising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea has denied charges it fired a torpedo that sank the Cheonan.

Might as well try and negotiate with the bulldog down the street.

Kim Jong Il is a grade A fruitcake. You cannot negotiate with people who are insane.

With a bonkers plan like this seems Kim Jong Il has some company in the loony brigade.....

This is not really that stupid a plan. East and West Germany were reunited.

How exactly does he plan to unite the North's shattered economy into the South's prosperous one without sinking it? And then there's the fact that NK's entire population is totally brainwashed...

This is apparently just rhetoric probably meant to undermine the NK regime, but the South Koreans want unity. It's all the same people and as they say, blood is thicker than water.

Something like Hong Kong and China can work, a full reunification can't

You mean a puppet run S.A.R with an illusion of autonomy?

Ultimately it will happen, they said the SU would not collapse, but it did. I'm sure these two will reunify - probably in our lifetimes. It will be all SK.

Well the GDR and GFR re-united quite well. The W G's still call the E G's lazy but less and less now. BTW who remembers how Margaret Thatcher was against it?

Yeah that's what I mean... With border control. They can use SK's currency etc, but not full integration, that will take years, decades...
Meanwhile, SK's debt and crime goes up

By the time GDR and GFR reunited, the income disparity was at 1:13, huge, but workable.

NK's income compared to SK's is somewhere along 1:70, and growing every year... If they were to reunite Germany style, that moment should have been the 80's.

Well it will happen eventually. It will be workable too.
