Plasma and LCD TVs: Prices plummet as new tech arrives

Good heavens, if there was a Makro here I'd probably splash on the 40" Samsung - they really are getting quite affordable. Patience is a virtue though!

Btw, since when do TVs have 3G? :p

I'm waiting another couple of years so that I can pick up a 50" full HD, LED TV for R5000.
It's just a matter of time.

ya I have a 32" Bravia that I paid R8k for and have been wanting to upgrade but going to keep it a while longer.

I have a 42" LG Full HD LCD, paid R6K for it new in March/April.

My 3 year old Sinotech is still going strong and looking great and the new TVs haven't given me a reason to upgrade, yet.

You get what you pay for. These are all entry level displays, 50Hz etc. I'd like the local agents to explain why we are paying 2 times more than overseas (depending on the model and size) as well as why there is such a huge jump from a 50 inch to a 63 inch plasma for example (ie R20000 difference) whereas overseas it is a few hundred dollar difference.

As soon as a supplier says "Strong Competition", I know they're lying through their teeth.
And, if you read the article and look at what it's saying, it is saying in plain and clear english that new technology is forcing the price drop.
/me points at Samsung South Africa and calls them opportunistic liars.

I am still on CRT. I am going to wait a while and let the prices drop before upgrade to LCD or LED

Good news for consumers is that this trend is likely to continue. 3G capable televisions are already the next best thing in the local TV market, making LED, LCD and plasma TVs look like ‘older technologies’.

3G, ... Don't you guys proof read?

This hardly ever works as when they do drop in price something better would have come along and the whole process starts again.

A better bet is to just get a TV when you see a good deal like the one I got at Game a few months back. I have still not seen that price matched yet.

Cool, so now your TV can be mobile as well. Pop your 50" into the back seat or on the train, pop in your simcard and browse the internet on a 50" on the go. :D:p

Sarcasm aside, it's good to see the prices plummet. My TV, which I bought in '08 is going for 50% less atm. My reasoning for the purchase of my current 42" plasma TV was that it will be my future bedroom TV and when prices drop more I'll get myself a 60" or something monster for the lounge.

I couldn't care less about 3D TVs. I hate having to watch something with those glasses on, and the 3D movies that I've seen had me missing chunks of the story because I was distracted by the visuals. 1080p will do just fine for now :)
