Would you support the SNO just to spite Telkom?

Would you switch to the SNO to spite Telkom? (note that this is not an official poll)

I wish I could link to a poll hosted om my pc, but I'm not allowed to host anything because it would constitute an abuse of service. (Just like just about anything except plain text browsing).

Anyway. I would like to know how many people would have their Telkom service cancelled from homes and business to support the SNO. It would effectively mean that you ban Telkom services all together.

EVEN IF the SNO rates are initialy higher and their service is worse than Telkom's. Hard to imagine I know, but not impossible.

Please remmeber the following
1) Its an national operator and not a corner hotdog vendor. There will be some issues at the begining as with any new venture.

2) Telkom has an 80years (or something similarly rediculous) advantage and they still suck! (Good sales/bull**** department though)

I feel that Telkom has done too much damage to this country already. They should be humbled. Support the SNO ENEN IF THEY SUCK AT FIRST.
The SNO can grow and improve. Telkom had their chance and held us hosstage for too many years.

I hereby promise to support the SNO granted that they fully oppose Telkom. I promise this even if it costs me more. :D

I might even host that poll. hmmmm

It's like going with iBurst or Sentech to try to get away from Telkom - you simply can't get past this evil beast.
 
Yes I would.. and I am going to.. and I'm taking everyone I know along as well, and as many people as possible who are currently telskom customers.

I also think it will depend on its offerings and how they treat their customers. Closer to the launch date I will try to set up an official meeting between us and the SNO to discuss their possible offerings etc.

I'm also looking forward to telling Telkom I dont want their telephone or adsl, I'm going with the telephone/adsl from whatever the (LENGTHY EDITED OUT COMMENT HERE :) er 'SNO' chooses to call itself :)

Initially they will have to use Telkom's infrastructure. There's just no way around it I guess. Supporting the SNO would be the most effective. They need to devellop their own infrastructure but need time and resources to do so.
If we support them it should happen quicker.

Its the lesser of two evils anyway.
 
Cobuss interesting and relevant post.

My thoughts are as follows:
1 The SNO have been working furiously behind the scenes to have the most up to date technology to offer us.

2 They have not publicly posted their business plan, but with all the dark fibre that Eskom and Transtel have laid, and I am sure they are going to have awesome capacity

3 Their int. access is still fuzzy, and this may be the most crucial part of being truly competitive, because they have to be independent of Telkom to be truly competitive. Hopefully TATA will pull a rabbit out of the bag.

To answer your question, I will be amoungst the first to jump ship, and will use all the influence I have over friends and family to do the same IF, AND ONLY IF they launch a competitive products that make commercial sense to change. I truly hope these products come soon as I cannot wait to jump ship.
 
They have the infestructre. Eskoms infestrucre is probably even larger than that of telkoms. Their fibre connections run all over the african continent. Eskoms power only supplies maybe 80% of south africa the rest goes to surrounding countries.
 
Methinx there's not much doubt that the majority of forumites would support the SNO, purely on principle, and despite the fact that it may even hurt their pockets to some degree - I certainly am one of them. If there's one thing that does count in Telkrap's favour, though, it's the general apathy that most ZA consumers have towards making a change - once they're in a comfort zone, it's too much bother to do so. To counteract this, the SNO needs to provide compelling reasons for making a change - maybe not necessarily based on monetary considerations (though this would certainly be compelling enough). There are any number of ways to do this covering product and service differentiation - it's not only price that counts. Roll on the SNO - and let's not make it yellow, hehehe...

The remaining shares are distributed between Nexus Connexion with 19%, the state-owned Eskom Enterprises (Esitel) with 13% and Transnet (Transtel) with another 13%.!

Hope that clears the eskom issue, couldnt find the main artical where it said that transtels infestructure would be absorbed but it will be.
 
My answer to the original question: Yes I would. Without a doubt. And I would totally enjoy every moment of telling Telkom that I no longer require their services... I might even tape the conversation and play it over and over to great delight.

"Thanks Telkom... but no thanks."
 
I have similar sentiments along the lines of morebroadband's post. However, from my bad experiences with Telkom and their callous profiteering at South Africa's expense, just on the principle of the matter I will take my business to the SNO and get as many friends, family, companies I know informed to make the move. I don't want to "support" a company that doesn't even think about me as a customer let alone the rest of the SA public.
 
I don't get it. Here we all are saying how expensive telkom are but will, without a second thought go to the SNO even if they are more expensive. I'm sorry to say that unless the SNO has competitive prices / products I will not change. As much as I would like to give telkom the finger, but it just doesn't make sense. We all know that telkom are extremely expensive ... if the SNO can't undercut telkom's offerings then you know things aren't going to change in the near future wrt telecommunications in good ol SA.
 
I would laugh, I would cry, and that would be before telling whichever telkom-gimp that picks up the phone to shove their crappy service up their evil behinds! And then I would get drunk. For a month.

I just want to motivate my stance again.

The SNO might not be competitive at first.
Telkom makes a silly little profit of R6.8 bil. a year.
Telkom has an 80 year advantage and they are not stupid. (Hard to believe I know)
If the SNO does not enjoy your full support they will ultimately struggle to be competive against Telkom.
If the SNO is not competive we will end up with another Vodacom/MTN/Cell-C situation. (Telkom takes their cut there too, btw)

Obvioulsy no one can be forced to use either operator. I just feel that we have a moral obligation to support the SNO even if it hurts at first. If you don't then you should stop complaining about Telkom and be happy with low standards and high prices. Put your money where you mouth is? ANY TIME!!

A thing to remember is that, if the SNO relies on the fact that people will move to their service to simply spite Telkom, it places them in a position not to offer good service - they just have to suck mildly less than Telkom.

There is very little chance that the SNO is not going to suck. (Thats just how things go with big businesses). So sucking mildly less than Telkom is an extremely attractive reason for me to switch over to them.
