Overseas lotteries out of bounds - SARB

Hectic.

Oh well, as the local lotteries are rigged I'll just abstain from playing any lottery.
 
In short, the government doesn't want us to play foreign lotto's because they aren't making money out of it
 
Seriously? What can they do about it? If I win $50 million in the Arizona State Lottery, pay the taxes there and leave it in a bank account there, there is not much they can do about it.

Sounds like crying over spilled milk.

sod them, just another excuse to take even more money from us. if i ever win the lotto, i will remove it all out of the country faster than you can say 'go to hell you thieving &*%$sl

It says not to play via credit card or debit card. What if you transfer funds from FNB to your paypal account and then pay with that?

Oh wait (slapping my forehead), the fvknuts in government will stop that too.
 
A Fin24.com reader who got burnt indicated that his bank had reported his transactions to the Reserve Bank after he had spent nearly R50 000 buying tickets.

50 grand on lottery tickets is insane, and there's also a limit to how much money one can move out of the country. its no wonder his bank pimped him. i really don't think anyone even notices if you just play small amounts.
 
The Forex rules are crazy, anyway.

Technically speaking it's illegal to buy a R5000 camera while on an overseas trip (allowance just for maintenance, entertainment, etc) but it's perfectly legal to spend R50 000 on prostitutes. Although the latter would not be tax deductable.

Reading the comments on the source page several people have gotten letters from their banks but nobody mentions which bank.... I want to know.... give me a conspiracy!
 
LOL - if I played one of those lotteries and won huge do you really think I'd care what any government thinks? There are enough places that don't care where your money comes from.
 
Well tbh, those lotteries are only open to people in those specific regions. And these sites act like "agents" and buy on your behalf so to speak. And I have always wondered what stops these "agents" from claiming your winnings and not informing you? Nothing basically as you should not be taking part in the lottery in the first place.

There is more than enough opportunity in SA to blow your money away on by playing games which offer ridiculous odds against winning...

I think the issue is about residing in SA and playing the lottery while being here. When you live abroad as a permanent resident (not a tourist on a temp visa), you live outside their jurisdiction.
 
What about dual citizenship cases? What stops me from going to the EU and buying tickets there? Technically I'm allowed to reside in any country there without 'registration' for up to 6 months, thereafter I just have to fill out a form saying that I'm residing in that country. So buy a ticket to say UK, buy a few lottery tickets, then go to germany, buy tickets, etc. I suspect the most i'll get from SARB is "eish, this one didnt fall for it".

Well, an EU citizenship would mean you have permanent residency status there. I guess if you do that while in the EU the SA government would have no case. Of course these are governments here, so you never know.

SA govt is not against dual citizenship per se. They just don't want you to take advantage of your foreign citizenship while in SA. While not in SA, you should have full rights to your other citizenship(s).
