Stunt Pilot Survives After Plane Loses Wing

Aug. 18) -- A video captured the terrifying moment when a daredevil pilot nearly lost his life after a wing snapped off his plane during a mid-air maneuver. Filmed by a spectator at an air show in Santa Fe, Argentina, this weekend, the film shows several thousand spectators gasp in horror as the plane hurtles toward the ground.

Luckily, Argentine pilot Dino Moline, 22, managed to activate the plane's ballistic parachute, allowing the crippled machine to float gently to earth. And miraculously, Moline walked away from the wrecked RANS S-9 Chaos plane unaided and only slightly injured, according to Argentine news site SF Noticias.


"I don't know what happened. I think it was fatigue," he told the site. "I felt an explosion and saw a shadow passing to the side of me -- it was the wing." He added that he'd burned his foot, but was otherwise unharmed. Cesar Faristocco, the head of Moline's aero display team, said that this sort of accident was "very rare" and only "happens once every 10 years across the world."

The RANS S-9 Chaos is an American-made kit plane that can be bought for $10,900, without an engine. And to the amusement of many YouTube commenters, the company's website notes that the plane comes with "removable wings" as standard equipment.

Gosh, glad the pilot kept his head and exited the plane as quickly as possible - a stunt pilot with 9 lives, and so young, he has a fantastic career ahead of him.
 
If you look when the wing came off where he was inverted, he pushed the stick forward. This would've induced negative g-force - something that airframe obviously didn't appreciate at the time. No idea what this aircraft is designed to handle in terms of wing loading but negative g's will always be more stressful on pilot and machine. Hank Evans for leetle parachutes.

If he had ‘exited the plane as quickly as possible’ he would have fallen like a bunch of keys and died. The parachute he uses is for the plane and the pilot. I am familiar with the system. They are investigating the possibility of installing them on bigger planes (but still small) like a trainer (for e.g. a Cessna 152).

Funny flying anecdote (well I thought it was yukworthy)

I flew microlight aircraft for many years. This parachute system was being promoted. They are usually rocket launched (like a mortor). The SA made (this was before ’94) parachute was secured under a wing and deployed by a drogue ‘chute. In an emergency the parachute was deployed and allowed the pilot and the microlight plane to drift to safety. The parachute was for the plane and the pilot. At any rate, one of the pilots was giving-up flying. He was wealthy (race horse breeder) and was ultra curious about the parachute. He decided that, as his swan song, he would deploy the parachute while flying to see what happened (and wreck his plane in the process – they weren’t terribly expensive [to him]).

He did this by himself. Everything went fine. The plane came down nose first and left him hanging in the straps on the ground. Now he was in a fix. To get out he had to undo the straps (which required both hands). He couldn’t protect his head and undo the straps at the same time, so he just had to fall on his noggin to get out. Hahahahahahahahaha <choke>.**cough** Well I thought it was funny anyway over beers in the bar. I guess you had to be there.
 
This is not the first time ive seen that happen , Search you tube for plane loosing wing and you will find a clip of the same thing except the pilot lands the plane safely with one wing.

Nope, depends all on the build of the plane. I've seen a video clip of an airforce pilot landing an F-15 Eagle with 1 wing. Modern day fly-by-wire planes are inherently unstable and will drop like a brick though.

I think the incident he's talking about is where the 2 F-15s collided (basically touched) midair and one was left with much of its wing missing and he did actually manage to land. The aerobatic vid where the entire wing came off and yet the pilot swooshed in and landed in about 50m is fake.
 
It's amazing how prpoer preparation averts disaster - in this case having a parachute.

It's also amazing how many computer users do no no preparation whatsoever and then winge when their plane hits the ground at high speed.
