In my little world : R350 for a 1mb adsl link and a 200GB cap :)

Wouldn't that be nice ? We can only dream...
 
If the throughput you're getting is lower that your current line speed, then upgrading the line won't make any difference.

For example, if you're running a 384k line and you're only getting 30kB/s on certain downloads, upgrading to a 1MBit line won't help. It will only help if you find that you're downloading at your 384k limit a lot of the time.
 
What jeeves is saying is that if you're downloads are never equal to or exceed your line speed, upgrading the line won't help.

I have 192 but download at 260 pretty much all the time, so I can definately upgrade to at least 384.

If I was only downloading at a max of 150, then my line may be too noisy for an upgrade
 
Im on 384k, I cant seem to download anything that isn't directly from a website at more then 10k, i blame Telkoms port and packet shaping. (from a website i often get 30-40k)

Now i don't really see the need for faster http so in my opinion Telkom can shove it.

i'm getting that sort of speed (30-40K) on 192k for http. bearshare is running at between 20K-30K depending on the rank of the file and the amount of sources. does distance to the exchange have anything to do with it?
 
Telkom takes the same copper in the ground ( aka scooby wire) and basically pumps as much as possible data out of it ..with other accessories. Telkom should run a separate CLEAN ,noise free line for adsl,isdn...and so forth.
THE BIG Q> Why doesnt someone from telkom (public relations or sumtin) ever read the complaints from custormers or from this site.
A> There aint one! god know where telkom spends all our hard earned money! their infrastructure is not all that good as compared to overseas telecoms.

Do you know how far you are from the exchange? also what is your SNR margin, and Line Attenutation at? Ideally you want SNR Above 20 dB, and LA Below 20 dB, If your SNR is below 6, your router/modem will drop. If your LA is above 60 you'll get very bad speeds and tons of disconnects.

While not important the output power reading can also effect your line, Max should be 15dB

Mine used to be through the roof (or under the floor), even though I was less than 1 km from the exchange. It took a year and a half to get it fixed. When I finally did, the techs did a line test for me and rated my line as able to handle close to 8 Mb/s from their tester... One day... maybe...
 
The problem is not the technology. It's there and other counties are using it.. The problem is Telkom / Saix ... To get a 2Mb interface (ATM) into SAIX is 27K a month for the bandwitdh... Telkom controls the international access that is where the problem is...
