ADSL 512 is a good example of "fooling the masses with B$".

The number 512 sounds big, especially to someone who knows just enough about computers to be dangerous. (I have 512MB of RAM, there's 512K of cache on my processor).

On the other hand, when we speak about broadband abroad, we say 2MB, or 8MB. Does this not dilute the impact we seek in making these comparissons? Afterall, 2 is much smaller than 512.

ADSL 512 should be nicknamed 0.5MB. Makes is sound really small.

and the all new and improved:
- Teklom ADSL 0.064 - Loooooool.

Instead of bandwidth you could have a relative scale of "broadness" as suggested before.
56k~64k = #1

So
192 ~ ADSL #3
384 ~ ADSL #6
512 ~ ADSL #8
1Mb ~ ADSL #16
2Mb ~ ADSL #32

Also good. The whole "point" here is too demystify the scales so that the uninformed have a clear basis for comparisson.Ask the average (technically illiterate) person which is better, 1mb or 1kb and the answers are bound to be 50/50.

Of course, the whole point may well be moot before long. That is, the EU will have 512MB connections, and we will have 384KB and the difference will be lost!
 
I had another thought last night. Even numbers are a bit vague, so maybe brand the offerings by use:

256kb: adsl: web + email
512kb: adsl: Audio
1Mb : adsl: Audio +
2mb : adsl: Video
4Mb : adsl:Video +
8Mb : adsl: Ultra

Or something like that . . .
 
It gets worse :-

0.512 ADSL - LWEB + UK WEB (1-189) ( HTTP[1] + HTTPS[2] + FTP[3] + EMAIL[3] + VPN[4] + P2P[-99]) + NY WEB (1-249) ( HTTP[1] + HTTPS[2] + FTP[3] + EMAIL[3] + VPN[4] + P2P[-99]).

i.e. ADSL 0.512 KB/s line with an ISP provided connection to the Local Web, and an ISP provided connection to a point in the UK, a contention ratio of 1 to 189, with these protocols shaped and prioritised as listed, and an ISP provided connection to a point in New York, a contention ratio of 1-249, with these protocols shaped and prioritised as listed.

Now - That should be informative enough to allow you to make an educated decision on the actual product offering.
