Johannesburg - Cosatu secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi pulled no punches when he launched a scathing attack against the country's “corrupt political elite” on Thursday, saying they are turning the country into a “full-blown predator state”.

Vavi singled out the “scandalous” ArcelorMittal transaction in which family members and friends of President Jacob Zuma controversially received millions or rands worth of shares in the valuable Sishen mine.

“We're headed for a predator state where a powerful, corrupt and demagogic elite of political hyenas are increasingly using the state to get rich,” said Vavi.

Just like the “hyena and her daughters” eat first in nature, the “chief of state's family eats first” in this predator state.

“We have to intervene now to prevent South Africa from becoming a state where corruption is the norm and no business can be done with government without first paying a corrupt gatekeeper,” Vavi said at a media conference at Cosatu House in Johannesburg.

Cosatu's senior leaders were vocal in condemning an extravagant government and privileged ministers who preach to civil servants about limited funds.

I'll shout viva for this guy as long as he is going for the throat of the corruption at the top.

The ANC has taken political corruption in South Africa to a new level.... and it is time to put a stop to it.

Talking about hyenas getting their bellies full, I've just watched Barbara Hogan on TV during a Parliamentary Q&A session. She was asked why Eskom management got an 82% increase last year....she said that that was incorrect, they only got an 18.5% increase and the rest was performance related payment.

My God! What performance, and why 18.5% when the rest of the country is crying poverty at an 8.6% increase for teachers.?!

Makes me sick!

Nepotism can get ugly, when the elite core and extended network are up against a huge worker class, who are showing their discontent.

Votes take wing and when the elections come, the people must show their united opposition to corruption and nepotism.

IMO, the ANC will continue to win elections. Probably until the second coming.

Vavi is flexing "his" muscles to get his snout in the trough. No more, no less.

I've started liking Vavi lately, and he hasn't been implicated in any serious corruption before, has he? (I only know of the M&G report about his wife, which seems to have been dropped)

So what do you base this on anyway? He's very vocal about being anti corruption so you must have at least some reason.

No chance, the people like hyenas.

If Vavi wants to make a contribution then he should make sure that Cosatu breaks with the ANC.

That is the only action that will help.
