Any truth in this: MOTOR INDUSTRY STRIKE : PETROL STATIONS CLOSING ?

I have not followed the news as religiously as one should, so do any of you know if there is any truth in the rumour that petrol stations may go on strike from Sept 1st ?

hmmm its been going around for a bit, the whole NUMSA thing also trying to jump in on the show but i really dont think
theres gonna be allot of fuss special with petrol stations closing ... its end month ppl have cash and they wanna fill up ;)
 
That's weird I was under the impression that NUMSA settled on a 10% increase this year followed by 9% next year and 9% the year after that. Why would they start striking again?

My info (sketchy and unsubstantiated) says this:

NUMSA has released details of its planned industrial action in the Motor Industry wage dispute, which are as follows:

1. Rolling mass action will take place as from Saturday, 21 August 2010, in the Eastern Cape, KZN and Gauteng. The Union has warned of "a red Saturday festival of militant action by workers"

2. As from 28 August 2010, the Union will be serving the Retail Motor Industry Organisation and the Fuel Retailers Association with strike notices for a strike that will commence on Wednesday, 1 September 2010.

The wage dispute in the Motor Industry covers a very wide range of issues, with the most important probably being the term of the agreement. The employers want a three year agreement but the Union is only prepared to negotiate a one year agreement.
 
So?... they can go on strike it just means we have to fill up our own cars.... Oh no the horror

People might actually realise that the Petrol attendants aren't necessary anymore....
 
Well, I am all for the strike, and while they are at it the government should implement the "self-service fill-up" as in America. We safe on wages for people who can't appreciate the fact that they had a job and we probably pay less tax as we are now performing that service ourselves.

I'm all for self service, but let's be realistic here. I don't believe government will go for this strategy as this will cause major a job loss, which is not inline with the Zuma's inauguration speech ( or which ever speech), where by how many millions of jobs will be created during his reign.

So write that one your stomach and wipe it off.
 
o yes, can you see half the population actually paying for their petrol once they've filled up? THATS why we dont have self service fuel stations here. it could almost be an article of faith that if the petrol station owners knew people were honest, they would quite happily NOT pay some poor bastards minimum wage to stand there and fill up your tank, wash you windows etc. they would have to keep one person on for oil and stuff though I imagine
 
Technology is so awesome these days. They can make the machine swipe your card before you are able to even pick up the hose. Then when you have the amount of petrol you want you put the hose back and the amount goes of your card. Whala. No stealing from this country citizens :)

Or people could google a bit and realise that those bastards do anything (and yes, overfilling on oil is VERY bad) to get you to buy more oil. True story: my friend asked them to do that, I called BS on them telling him he needs oil (he apparently topped at a petrol station 500 km earlier), asked the guy to show me the dipstick, shows me a dry one. I think, "wtf", and get him to put it in, he takes it out (this is right infront of me) wipes it clean and shows me. Gave him a "why the hell are you wiping it? don't you think it will always be empty?!!?!?!?". I forgot to ask whether he has no shame in being caught out like that or whether they train them (more likely) that this is the way oil is checked. Seriously, numbskulls.

If you've received an e-mail warning you to fill up with petrol because of a looming strike on Wednesday - Newswatch has spoken to the Fuel Retailers Association for clarity on the matter.


The Association’s CEO, Reggie Sibiya, says there's no need for motorists to panic.

He says they have been issued with a notice to strike by union, Numsa, but petrol stations will still be open.

He says the association is still trying to see if this strike - which is part of the ongoing motor industry wage dispute - can be averted.

But if it does go ahead on Wednesday, Sibiya says the levels of disruption will vary from station to station depending on the number of unionised petrol attendants.

He says they have however sent out a response plan to their members to ensure that business carries on in a safe environment.

"We are hoping that when people who aren't unionised want to come to work, they wont be intimidated, but we've also been in touch with SAPS on that note and then also just to make sure that people on site know the emergency response plan if there is any issue."

Sibiya adds that there shouldn't be disruptions in terms of petrol delivery.

Works elsewhere in the world. Pay first and then fill up would work here. Credit card pumps work in Europe.

The reason that we don't have self serve is that the price is controlled. If garages could discount petrol we would soon see self serve.
 
Pick n Pay implemented self service at the pumps (gave the pump jockeys other jobs) in the eighties, and the fuel companies stopped deliveries.

I'd welcome self service stations like they have in Europe and the US.
 
ok, valid points said to what I said, but all of you "well-off" people have access to debit cards (they dont accept credit cards at petrol stations) with money available. what percentage of the SA population has that luxury? and yes, it is actually possible to own a car with having a bank account. I also know several people that refuse to use cards at petrol stations due to incidents of them having their card skimmed, which does happen with disturbing regularity :(
