Online betting in South Africa - still legal according to Powerbet Gaming

Yep, there are many bookmaker sites still legally active and the main Tote site as well. Only the online casino sites are affected by this ruling.
 
What's disturbing is the fact that they mention banking institutions are also confused. Why do they need to be confused? They are probably concerned that processing a payment on behalf of a client to a gambling website will seen as facilitating a crime. I on the other hand feel that my money is my money. I can pay it to whomever I want.. whether I commit a crime using my money is none of their business. The only way that they will be able to CURB online gambling is to attack at the payment level...
 
On a related note, SilverSands has excluded all SA based players from playing, but you can access your balance and get withdrawals.
3Piggs/Piggs Peak has ceased all activity (temporarily shut down) till their appeal is heard in court. You can still make withdrawals with them by emailing their support.
 
so you can bet on some fools running around after a ball, but not some fools throwing around pieces of printed cardboard. Oh.. that makes sense, its also legal to buy alcohol and cigarettes, but ILLEGAL to buy marijuana that is usually touted as medicine to help conditions caused by the former. Im so tired of this ****ing planet i want to puke.
 
The reason why online gambling is not allowed here is because there no way to regulate it terms of the chance of winnings, payment of winnings, no way to stop addicted gamblers since there's no way to bar them from playing unlike casino's here.

+1. It makes NO sense to me whatsoever that Online Poker would be illegal, but Online Betting isn't? You're still gambling and relying on unknowns; It's still tax-free. Just about everything is the same? Surely "online betting" should be just as illegal? With poker, at least YOU control your chances to a degree... if anything it should be the "less illegal" of the two?
 
"they" want to make it illegal cause "they" can't get a slice of it

Thats not correct as bleh69 so eloquently put it :p we already have legal online gambling in this country.

Actually it's not tax free, both the punter and the bookmaker are taxed.

The current rate is 6% I believe.

Unfortunately in this country your money is not your money, it is the ANC's money. They only allow you to use a little bit of it to survive so you can keep on working to make them more money.
 
What I don't get is how online sports betting is any different to casino gambling. Seems a bit hypocritical.
 
Its all about the regulation of it if you ask me.

Sports betting is fairly heavily regulated, whereas online casino's are not at all.

The problem is that SARS cannot track online credit card transactions as efficiently as the banks can and rely on the banks to do this for the. Most credit card transactions are processed through banskserv and the banks will need to relay this info to SARS. The problem with this setup is that there can be quite a few false positives. I heard on the radio the other day of a couple that went oveseas and used their credit card. When they returned to SA, their bank sent them a letter asking them to clarify a transaction as it was reflected as online gambling and that the bank will need to forward this info to SARS. It turned out that they did not even use the cc at a casino but for a ferry and the ferry was owned and operated by a casino.

It is still legal to use your cc at a casino while visiting a foreign country. The issue with Bankserve is that it cannot distinguish between an online transaction within SA to an online casino and a transaction that actually physically took place at the casino that also has online gambling facilities as the reference on the cc might be very similar if not the same.

The banks are unfortunately being tasked with policing this on behalf of SARS.

And what if you use your money to order a hit on somebody or fund a terrorist attack? Still not their business? If you use your money to commit a crime, not only is it the states business, it is expected by the general public that they should intervene and arrest you. Making online gambling illegal is silly, but saying that you should be able to freely use your money to facilitate crimes is even more so.

I think whats Natas is saying is "I should be able to use their money however they see fit as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else." That would be my understanding but literal interpretation make for good internet trolling. Much like the other normal freedoms enjoyed. Who you marry, if you watch porn, drinking alcohol. All your choices - as long as its not hurting anyone else.
The government, and most governments in general, like to make laws to "protect" you from you.
Examples: Motorcycle Helmet, Bicycle Helmet laws, Most Drug Laws, Seatbelt Laws, etc... ||| Ironic how if you want an abortion however it becomes "your body - your choice"?!
These are all victim-less crimes, as its gambling.
