Truth or Fiction: Telkom running out of copper

Hiya folks

I've been chatting to one of my friends who is reasonably well informed with the Telkom guys (talks to them now and then). Apparently the rumor has it that telkom copper is growing scarce and very soon new ADSL customers may not be accepted.

I wanted to know what has happened to the "rollout of infrastructure" that Telkom has been claiming all these years... apparently:

costs too much to recover the cost of the device they need to install in the exchange and will take 2 years per device to recover that money from the customer

I dought it, they have enough money to afford pretty much anything if they dont roll out more then theyed be in a lot of trouble
 
1st they posted a profit in the billions, how does that mean you cannot afford it ?
and 2nd, 2 years to recover the cost, so, they they only plan on having us as clients for less than 2 years ?

Well - whatever excuse they can come up with to explain the slow ADSL rollout.
It's not that hard to bugger up the ordering of copper communication wire so that you run out and have to wait 8 months for a ship to arrive at durban while ADSL users scream for service.

Sounds crazy. Just the installation fee alone is apparantly nearly enough to cover the cost of the DSLAM port. They have probably recovered the costs within the first three months at worst.

Thats spot on there is more cable in the scrap yards than under gound

If thats the case how are they going to provide even basic telephone service to a house?

Let me put i like this, As you said that "rumor" has it which is exaclty what it is RUMOR

Do we realy inport copper from over-seas "I dont think so"
S.A is a mining house and I could be corrected but We surly have copper mines here if not here Then in Zim and we all know that relation there are GOOD
 
AHHAAHHAHAHAAHHHAHAHAHHAHAHAH!!!

Okay there's three reasons why I'm certain this is fake:

1. It comes from "Telkom"
2. South Africa has enourmous reserves of copper AFAIK?
3. If telkom were to run out of copper, not only would they be forced to halt the rolling out of ADSL, but every other service they render.

This is the most obvious prank - and you all fell for it.. LOL - idiots :P
 
They are not running out, the issue lies in the fact that the existing copper is in such a bad state of repair - hence the fact that they *claim* they cannot drop the line rental, they would be running at a loss in case of the need to repair.

that could be true but i think i might be just a bit HOT for them too
