Statement from MTN:

Following the North American launch of the BlackBerry Torch smartphone with the highly anticipated BlackBerry 6, MTN South Africa today confirmed that the new smartphone, the world's first smartphone to combine a BlackBerry keyboard with a full touch screen experience, will be available in South Africa soon.

More details will be made known closer to availability.

but 'soon' in African time could mean six months.
 
Fingers crossed that soon is indeed soon! Upgrade due in October.
 
Interesting comment DJ. Have you tried / got both models. What do you reckon are the pros and cons of each model?

I've tried both of them, the Torch I tried in an AT&T store whilst the 9700 I had borrowed for the time I was in the US. There was some noticable lag when I tried the Torch, apparently an update to the BB OS 6 will sort it out but aside from the 512MB of RAM, the bigger screen and improved camera(being a 5mp) it really doesn't to show the full potential of the phone. Honestly the iPhone 4 or even the Palm Pre Plus seemed to be more appealing at the time.

Every review I've read on the torch (except crackberry) has generally been negative and pointed out significant lag on everything, the biggest disappointment for me is the screen resolution hence I'm on Android now (galaxy) although there are a lot of thing Blackberry does better, I'll probably go back when the torch 2 comes out.
 
That's why I've sworn off buying 1st gen devices - there's always something wrong with - either intentionally or not - ALWAYS, but ALWAYS wait for V2 to come out!

Case in point - the 1st BB Storm, iPhone, Palm Pre, iPad... And now the BB Torch. And worst of all, I've owned all the devices except the latest BB and the 'Pad...

Although the 4G iPhone makes up for the 1st iPhone, it also suffers from 1st gen syndrome - the antenna problems! And imagine an iPad with a dual core cpu, more ram and retina-class display with even higher resolution! And wait for it - 128GB storage...

The Palm Pre is the best out of the lot, but just think how much better WebOS 2.0 will work on a 2.0 hardware! Even my Palm Pre Plus is only like V 1.5, not 2.0!
