I really need to get ADSL up and running. Currently you get the Modem and connection fee free if you sign up for a 24 month contract. This works out to about R1000 if I remember correctly. What is the future of ADSL looking like in the next 24 months? Thanks.

Hi clark, welcome to MyADSL.

Do yourself a favour, don't sign a contract with Telkom - you'll be signing your life away. A lot is going to happen in the next 24 months and you don't want to be stuck in a contract. Please think very carefully about this.

No, I would never sign a contract. You can get the modem cheaply somewhere else...

No. Let me be the first to say NO!

Telkom are the devil. Besides that, they are (AFAIK) more expensive than most other ISPs here... also, it is the norm for ISPs to give you a month to month offering so that if you are dissatisfied you can change. If you're locked into a 24 month contract, your only choice is to default.

If you care about such things, it's also been brought to our attention that signing a telkom contract means you waive certain constitutional rights... just do a search for it and you'll find it here.

clark, it would be better signing a piece of paper handed to you by the red guy with the horns and pointy tail.

He calls the shots at Telkom, or so I hear.

Nope, definately not! dont make the same mistake i did

hey, thanks for the quick response. Guess I will sign up for a month then. My first time posting but will be visiting often in the future.

clark - shop around, you can pick up ADSL modems for as little as R400.

Also, DO NOT use Telkom as an ISP - I did and am paying for my mistake dearly. It works fine, until you decide to switch ISP's - then try getting them to stop billing you ! - ;)

hmm, drinking dog urine on a monthly basis - or signing anything with Telkom.. tough choice
Drinking the dog urine is still the better bet - Telkom will leave a nasty taste in your mouth.

first of all, i hate telkom just as much as you cats.

i have the 24 month contract. i don't pay for my ADSL. the new BILLION modems (black/charcoal ones) that telkom supplies free with the contract are VERY good. i hardly ever drop, sometimes connected for 2 - 3 days. that is the 'pro' of getting the contract.

yes, a lot will happen in the next 2 years. but that said, no SNO (second national operator) will be able to beat the prices that telkom charge at the moment, especially when they are just starting up..

i think at the end of the day though, if you can afford an ADSL router (R500 - R1000), then rather buy one and pay your monthly ADSL subscription instead of signing the contract.

peace

Wow reading all these posts, if another operator is to come into the market, my guess is that all of you will switch and alot of South Africans, I know I will. Of course their product has to be quality. telkom has made alot of enemies.

Firstly let me say I hate Telkom as much as the next guy.
I got my ADSL last month and I DID NOT get the contract............
But having bought a Billion 5100 modem / routrer for R624 + R404 for installation it cost me R1028 .Telkom gives the same modem and charges no istallation fee if you get a contract.
So why not?? what you have to loose............ do u think that within 24 months there will be SNO that will run a copper cable to your house? think not.
I will never take TELKOM as an ISP but i do think that 24 month contract with fee installation and router is a fair deal.

There is always a point... the point about not getting a Telkom contract is just that. You're not going through Telkom. I feel a helluva lot safer with my Imaginet account than I do with Telkom because I know that they will:

1) Never change their prices without informing me
2) Always treat me with a certain level of respect
3) Never, ever give me crap if I need to cancel my account with them

With Telkom I know no such thing.

But I am not talking about ISP contract............and last time I heard Imaginet will not supply you with copper line.....
Which ever ISP you choose to go (i am with WEBAFRICA) you still need to pay TELKOM for ADSL line (R270 for 192kbs , R349 for 384kbs etc.)
The ONLY question is will be on month to month bassis or on 24 month contract.
I say go for the contract you will save R1028 for the same hardware.
regards
