Is there any hope for november onwards

With pay per gig currently steaming ahead for 1 November on both IS and SAIX backbones and the hard cap coming from SAIX's side (IS hasnt mentioned what speeds would apply if capped) what would the person using broadband for what its meant to be used as do ? I mean say a 1mb person using just 30 gigs a month at say R50 per gig would be clocking up R1500 which is the price of a IS uncapped acc.

Anyone have any comments/predictions for 2 months time ?
 
All we can do is wait for an official move, but it doesn't look good. I ordered ADSL, but have since canceled the installation and decided to stay with iBurst. At the moment it seems to be the best option open to me. :(

I hope ICASA can fight telkom on this and not be over ruled by our seemingly uneducated minister of communications. I wonder if she's not taking bribes :eek:
In this country....unfortunately nothing can surprise me. :(

I really do wish it all gets sorted soon though, and we get in line with international trends. :)
 
It frustrates me to no end, I mean 1mb comes out, yay double the speed but then pay per gig in 2 months. I just hope Internet Solutions decides NOT to hard cap.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I hear Internet Solutions doesnt use that sat3 for international but they use sattelite ? (thus the generally junk ping for games that require > 64k latency). But telkom still controll's local b/w, would there be any way for telkom to be avoided completely ?

Consumer boycot Telkom untill they fold

If Telkom do not come to the party we must cancel all services, Use cells until they fold or goverment have to step in. Also stop paying their bills. If everybody join in such drive imagine the impact. Come November I quit again thats the best

I don't believe that would impact Telkom much.

1) The largest cellular company in SA is Vodacom. That will boost Vodacom's profits, and since Telkom owns half of Vodacom, that money goes to Telkom

2) I won't be able to do it myself, as I need my internet connectivity for work purposes, and can't afford not to have it.

3) Even if 5,000 people boycott Telkom, and each of them spend R1,000.00 less on Telkom bills, it's still only R5m. Telkom's profit (not turnover) in the last financial year was 1,000 times greater than that. They won't notice that.

4) The only way an action like the one you suggest will work, is if the big corporates step in and assist, and they are VERY dependent on internet and telephones to survive. Imagine what people will say of a large bank if they suddenly have no ATM's, no telephones, no Internet Banking ... Since none of the cellular companies are geared to carry the volumes of telephony and internet traffic these companies generate, this is what will happen.

Personally I believe the correct way is what the forum has been doing - raising national and media awareness and lobbying the goverment and state regulators to force changes on Telkom.
 
Correct me if im wrong, but arent telkom going against their advert of "fixed monthly fee". I mean that was one of the reasons i got adsl (it was before iburst and all that became available), simply so that there would by a constant monthly fee, and i'de have no surprises. Pay per gig! surprise!!!
 
heh with 56k/isdn you pay per minute/hour. With adsl its going to be per gig, broadband in south africa seems to have turned into some hybrid cross dial-up child of broadband.
 
Well i'm lucky to have an uncapped account(sorr) (i don't pay for ISP) so when 1 november comes i will rape international bandwidth in spite of telkom.
 
all we can really do is wait. at present i would have to downgrade my 30gig to a 5gig which seems inline with what i'm paying now. My suggestion - hammer your highcap accounts for what you need, so that there's nothing left to do than surf and idle by the time November hits. I WILL NOT TAKE PAY PER USAGE - THAT'S JUST STUPID

All we can hope for is that telkom will drop prices (ye ye...), ICASA makes Telkom drop their ADSL Rental and up the cap, Because then you can afford to take something a little bigger again...

The international telecoms world is changing - perhaps Telkom or the Government will eventually realise they're being left behind (i think they're realising it if you ask me) and SA will have no other choise but to start catching up.

One thing i've noticed, Telkom don't say much, they just do alot to piss people off until someone high up says something about it and all of a sudden it changes. Perhaps there's hope with the new CEO! I kinda like him allready! As all things, it only takes one wrong move before he makes his name bad - and he's here to impress and compete - so lets see where this goes.
 
how can we now pay per gig? once again Telkom is up to its tricks. Client service goes out the window followed by all ADSL users, as we can't afford it.

If I'm not mistaken I'd say that the per-gig billing will also impact whoever is offering "uncapped" accounts now.

Slinky511nx7, I hear Internet Solutions are keeping their business uncapped adsl but thats +- R1500 per month. Dont know what the story with UUNET based isp's is.

I look at telkom releasing their 1mb option and then I look at the ammount that you could download per month at say 80% speed and that would be something like 258 gigs a month.
