' Am gonna spend a weekend in the vicinity of Umhlanga and was wondering if it is worth (from a shopper's perspective) to visit the Gateway shopping centre.

Would there be anything one cannot readily get in JHB and therefore worth a stop?

Thanks

Hmm...Not sure :erm:

If you make a list of everything available in JHB, I'll tell you whether there is anything available at Gateway that you cannot readily get in JHB :p

Funny!

I was really thinking of anything out of the ordinary, speciality-stores, etc.

it's cool, I get you, like i can hook you up. you won't find the good stuff that makes durban famous at the man's place, but the snoop dawg is connected. call me.

Decent curry? :D

You might find things a bit cheaper but I doubt there'll be anything you can't get in Durban that you can't get in Jhb.

If you are an adrenalin junkie the guys who run the big swing at the stadium have opened up something called an Elevator Jump at one of the hotels on the beach front.

Elevators normally feature a box that goes smoothly up and down. Ours doesn't. Going up is fairly uneventful. Slowly, to 37 storeys above the ground. Great view!
And then the fun really starts! Free fall, until the speed of descent reaches 120kph, and the brain says: "I'm jam!".
The World's first skyscraper freefall!! (For the technically minded, stopping is achieved by a combination of a huge electric motor, made with pride in Australia, and double Danish brakes, which function independently. Reassuring, eh?)

On the bright side Durban is Africa's Miami :D

Decent curry? :D

I think JHB's curries are better than the typical "Durban style" curry :)

Just about 99% of the stores you listed were sent over to DBN .... from JHB !

On the bright side Durban is Africa's Miami :D

I do love the art deco style of architecture of Miami ... is it to be seen anywhere in DBN?

There are some good examples in older parts (Musgrave, Berea area) but they are being modified, demolished and painted purple by the needs of the extended families of Indian dwellers. It’s disappearing along with the more colonial architecture. Pity.

You seem so proud? Hmm, yes, but we have Durbanised them with Durban service levels, an experience not to be missed :D

Almost entirely eradicated ;)

Gateway dwarfs any shopping centre Johannesburg has to offer.

Please just say the JHB centres are size-disadvantaged, there are little people on these forums and they have feelings too.

Blu, I strongly Strongly recommend going to the Durban soccer stadium.
They have a big rush type jump thing off there, a lift that goes over the top and you can pay to go inside and check it out..

Perhaps it has more appeal for the male species, but to be honest, i truly loved the stadium and its surroundings!

Gateway dwarfs any shopping centre Johannesburg has to offer. When I was there about two years ago I found the experience humbling.

Yeah but the OP asked if there were any places that may not be found in JHB.... which is highly unlikely :)
It's more the other things (not shops) that make it interesting... a rock climbing wall, the skate park, body boarding, go karting, putt putt and depending on the day you go, there may be an event staged by the rock climbing wall.

No kidding ! I am sure someone will flame me for saying this, but IN MY EXPERIENCE, Indian people have very, ummm .... gaudy taste in interior AND exterior decorating :D

So you serve us "one time" ... or something like that.

Gateway has IMAX. There is no shopping centre in Johannesburg which has IMAX. Menlyn in Pretoria is the only one in Gauteng. The sheer beauty of the place is other-worldly. I haven't seen anything like it in Johannesburg. Wasn't Gateway the largest shopping centre in the Southern hemisphere until recently?

Had IMAX. Closed down nationwide now.
Hmm, largest? Depends how you measure and who you believe.
