Best of a bad Bunch ? Need Advice

Hi Everyone

I'm in the process of moving house and won't be able to get ADSL for some time. Im' currently looking at a wireless solution. I will be mostly using the connection with Cisco VPN to telnet to routers in USA for online labs. I anticipate not requiring much bandwidth in terms of capacity but round about 20 - 30k of reliable (fairly low latency) bandwidth would be fine. I'm currently in the Boskruin area and would appreciate if you can make a recommendation in terms of iBurst, MyWireless and MTN (3G/Edge).

Will appreciate your inputs.

I'm in Weltevreden Park, on MyWi 256, generally very happy with it. Surfing/mail is good, downloading is good, and I'm quite happy with the speed when I use Cisco VPN in to a Windows Terminal Server at work.

I don't think latency is great though.

Hi there

I ran pings as you see at http://www.spcn.co.za/bdt/pings.pdf from a site in Northcliff, up and behind Northcliff Corner ~5.3km from the Sentech tower (STW116) where we have clear visual LOS. They were run around 00h00 with no other traffic on the line; make of 'em what you will.

Without more info I can't answer whether you'd have coverage in Boskruin, but that area IS in range of CMT108 (the Mintek tower).

Boskruim should have ADSL, i live in Bromhof, just a little way from Woolwoths and i have ADSL, how far into boskruin do u live..

Halicon - In terms of latency - maybe I'm wishfull but 400 - 500 ms would be fine (we are getting about 280ms international with MPLS network)

I'm currently in Boschkop Ave right next to the koppie, will be moving to Sherwell in November right on the other side of the koppie.

Apparently Telkom has about a 9000 backlog in ADSL (according to stats at Internix) installations and I would only be able to apply for ADSL after I have moved into the new property - which leaves me with a hopefull date of about Jan 2006 for installation.

Claymore do you experience any timeouts or session drops ? What is the availability of the Sentech network ? - Seems like you are not too disgruntled ...

theov, seeing as you're new here (and can be forgiven for not knowing who's who in the zoo here ;)), I'm (in part) a MyWi reseller (and this is the important bit) high gain installer: this isn't to make me out as being any better than anyone else, just a simple statement of fact. In the past year, I've accumulated a bunch of installations in double figures, with successful tests that didn't go through to a job at double that number.

I can state with reasonable confidence that a properly fed MyWi site, whether "naked" (ie no HGA) modem, or with an antenna really IS quite reliable in maintaining a reliable connection. Of course, from time to time the network does go wonky but that's usually pretty transient and access ALWAYS comes back when Sentech get everything back online again.

I've checked the sentech coverage map and it states "partial" coverage for both existing and new residences. How would you rate "partial" in terms of your experience ? Does it mean that I would need an external antenna or something in addendum to the modem ?

Virtually no downtime. I think we've had one problem that was actually Sentech's issue in the last few months, and maybe a couple of issues where I couldn't authenticate after power failures, but on connecting up via USB (I normally use PPPoE) it connected up right away.

I'm in a tiny "partial" area surrounded by "no coverage", and we connect with 3 our of 4 bars on the modem. Can't remember the actual signal strength, but last year when they were mucking with the towers, we could still connect with a 1 or 2% signal. I have tried an omnidirectional antenna and a patch antenna, with no improvement. We no longer have signal problems though.

Maybe try a New keybord or mouse before you get a Wireless Trial.
It seems that you inadvertantly triple click or something.
mAYBE not a wireless mouse either
