As you probably know, when there's a power failure, the phone still works - because there's electricity powering that line. However, you maybe didn't know that there are ways to use that electricity for your own purposes.
There isn't a lot of info online in this regard, as telephone companies themselves obviously don't like the idea of someone piggybacking off their systems to run whatever appliances they fancy.
However, given that Telkom is evil personified - I see no problem with exploiting an area that they are fairly unprepared for.
High tech games..
(The electrical engineer-type forum geeks might want to weigh in with their thoughts on local specs for suitable adapters and transformers.
To show what's possible, here's a partly joking, but completely serious genuine sell-through site, firstly for 'unique telecom and cable products':
http://www.sandman.com/
And then, the interesting section dealing with adapters for weird products
powered solely via that phone jack in the wall: http://www.sandman.com/telco.html
A little bit of reading on that site suggests there's the potential for a variety of naughtiness options..look over : http://www.sandman.com/wizard.html
Anyone else have some sites with interesting gadgets that would make Telkom very unhappy? Post 'em..
