Well, LEAF says the phone should be in SA by end of October! I asked if that means the stores will have it by end of October and they confirmed that it will be!
So I guess I'm pushing my upgrade date back to get this phone.
Anyone else read up on this phone? Your opinions?
Thanks

Just noticed the phone supports DLNA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Living_Network_Alliance) which means it can stream media and stuff. That sounds great. Unfortunately, I've already upgraded to the iPhone 4

So if you had a choice, you would have taken the Desire HD? I'm asking as I don't quite know if I should upgrade now to the iPhone 4 or wait for this. The Desire HD does sound amazing!

Don't get me wrong, the iPhone 4 is a beautiful piece of technology, but the flexibility and scalability offered by the Android OS really is something to pev over.
Like many have said before, it really depends on what you want in a phone. Desire HD is unfortunately currently not available, so comparing a phone that does not "exist yet" to the iPhone 4 would rather not be realistic.
I would recommend you wait till Desire comes out and see what people have to say about it first..then make your decision...and by then the iPhone 4 would have been well entrenched within the masses and you'd know exactly if you'd be still interested or not

I've been doing research on the phone, albeit a bit differently. Instead of reading reviews, I've searched for YouTube videos: HTC Desire vs IPhone 4. They're pretty much equal contenders. The only thing that makes iPhone 4 much better is its amazing crystal clear screen. The other area the the iPhone "beats" the Android (HTC) desire is the number of applications. (iPHone has 200 000, Andriod has 50 000). I really don't care about application availability and quantity.
I'm gunning for the HTC Desire HD when I'm due for my upgrade in November. I hope MTN will have it available at similar pricing to the "normal" HTC Desire. (R329 per month on contract).

Howzit guys,
The phone will probably be in the country by mid- to end-October, but by the time MTN releases it on contract, it might be more November-ish. Just sharing what I know (work part-time in sales for Leaf). Not sure about Vodacom...
Honest opinion, having played with the iPhone 4, the screen is wicked, camera's good, but personal preference for me, for software, I'd go for Android. Small things like object push (sending files via Bluetooth) not available on a normal iPhone (not counting jailbroken phones here) kinda irritate me. The interface is brilliant though, and I find the on-screen keyboard a tad more accurate than the Desire's. Desire's camera has more settings to play with though, and seems of similar quality.
Will let you guys know if I hear anything about pricing...
EDIT : The above post was made in a personal capacity, NOT as any type of official message from Leaf S.A.

Remember, the networks and various retail stores also play a part in the delay. "In the country" doesn't necessarily mean "available to the public".

Well then leaf should do something about Vodacom/MTN always saying its them... in fact - Leaf should do something about their store also saying it hasn't arrive. Whats the point of saying its in the country then? Just so they can? Then they might as well import one model now and say its in the country.

I'm just saying, there's more than one person involved in things like these. I didn't say Leaf uses the term "in the country" to imply anything, I'm just using the OP's post as an example that one can never really know what goes on between the different companies.

Considering its usually HTC phones that have supply issues... it generally starts with the supplier.
Just about every HTC phone I've tried to get has had issues, e.g. Tytn 2, HD2, Desire,

Don't remind me! I think I'm the most confused I've ever been. I really liked the Desire HD since I read up on it, but when I heard the release date is still a couple of months away, I decided to get the Nokia N8 - since the camera is unbelievable!
Now I heard that it is coming to SA first / second week of November. So I might just as well wait. I'll miss out on the camera, but that's ok. I just think the Desire HD is the best overall phone for me. I think we should swap phones for a week :)

It really would be ideal to test the phones for a week before buying!
It definitely does boil down to what you value most in a phone. If I think about my usage I realise why I lean so heavily in favour of the phone with the exceptional camera. I use my phone for the following, in order of most used :
Calls
Messages
Alarm
Photos
Some web browsing
GPS
And then other things like daily weather forecasts etc
With an FM transmitter I'm sure I'd use it for music a lot more too.
Now the camera is even used by me to "scan" documents for work. I'll photograph them and then print to pdf if I do not have a scanner handy. For me having got used to a xenon flash a phone with anything less would just feel like a step backwards.

The delay of the Nokia N8 was big news and made headlines all over the show but I have read very little said about this :
When HTC unveiled the HTC Desire HD and the Desire Z at its London launch event in September, the handsets were labelled with an 'early October' release.
Both devices have recently gone on sale in Asia but it looks like the European launch could be delayed after both handsets failed Google's Type Approval testing processes, testing that the HTC Desire initially failed when it came to market. A launch that was once thought to be on October 7, then mid-October, could now be pushed back to the end of October.
http://www.techweet.com/story/htc-desire-hd-and-desire-z-fall-foul-of-google-testing-get-delayed
Looks like the HTC Desire HD and Desire Z have been delayed.
The reports come in from Major UK retailers. The phones were supposed to launch in the first half of October, but it now looks like it might happen much later.
Customers who pre-ordered got a responce that the devices are delayed due to “Google Type Approval”, which apparently is a process that all Android devices must go through. HTC had a similar delay with the initial Desire phone.

"Forget"? It's a design decision, they don't "forget" things like that. LED flash is useless. The phone takes decent low-light pics if you set it to night mode.
I wonder how the battery life of this Desire HD is. It has a much smaller battery than the Galaxy S (1250 mAh). How is that going to make it through the day when the Desire already struggles with a 1400 mAh?
Also how does the music quality do.
It looks like an awesome phone but I worry about music quality (apparently HTC sucks at this in general) and battery life. Hard to see if it would be an upgrade from the Galaxy S. I guess it will come down to personal taste.

Last week I asked vodacom via twitter when this phone will be available here is their response:
"Usually devices are available in 3-6 months if its passed testing and if the Networks find it suitable for use in SA"
Now I can't wait that long for this phone, so I'm thinking of getting the phone from the UK. I'm just wondering if it will work here on prepaid???

It seems to have been released in the UK. I've read the responses in GSM Arena (the bottom of the specs page). People are talking about their experiences with the phone.
I'm just worried that since the Nokia N8 is taking so long to get to SA (It's been released in the UK for a few weeks now), that the Desire might take long as well.
But, I jumped ship and got the Samsung Galaxy S (I get to upgrade my Vodacom contract early next year - and by then the Desire HD should be available or a new / better phone should be out).

I am considering on getting the HTC Desire HD from the UK. My question is will my current contract work in the phone if I get a sim free phone from the UK. I really don't want to wait 3 - 6 months for the HTC to arrive and I also don't want to go for the Samsung Galaxy S as it may already be classified as an "old phone".

I was in the same boat as you! Couldnt decide to wait or not. Spoke to the MTN Rep and he told me 3 - 6 months as well. So, I jumped ship and got the Samsung Galaxy. I have two contracts - one with MTN and one with Vodacom. My Vodacom is due early next year. So, by then there might be better phones or if not, I could always get the Desire HD.
My impressions of the Galaxy HD is very very positive. I dont' have any of the lags people are reporting. The photo's are really very good (I have a 12mp Digital camera at home and compared the photo's and it did not look bad next to it at all), but you can't take night photo's - no flash. The video recording is brilliant! Touch screen is so sensitive! Amazing! And I get about 3 days use from it - with playing videos on it, making calls, etc. Haven't tried the GPS (have a Garmin though).

Have you tried a different application launcher, like Launcher Pro or ADW Launcher yet? You get to keep the niceties of TouchWiz (like the contacts), but get completely different (and customizable) home screens and app drawer. You can also download other (arguably better) keyboards as well. You get Vlingo for free through Samsung Apps and that has a pretty decent keyboard as well. I prefer it above Better Keyboard and the SenseUI keyboard.

ok, just came back from canal walk in Cape Town. There was a HTC promotion stand together with MTN. They even had posters of the Desire HD. The guy from HTC told me that the Desire HD will be available with MTN in the first week of November, but just with MTN exclusive for some time. MTN owns partly the company which imports HTC products. Vodacom will get it later, he said could be 1 or 2 weeks or even up to 6 months ... he does not know. So told him that I'm not happy about this and I will get a Galaxy or an Iphone. The he said probably just a few weeks later it will be available at vodacom and I should ask them. The vodacom store then told me as well that they usually get HTC devices 2 to 3 weeks after MTN has them. If it takes longer I will get a Galaxy, but I would prefer to get the Desire HD.

You would be crazy to take a Galaxy instead of the Desire HD.

True, but my phone is broken, the microphone so other people can't hear me too well, the sceen ... did wash the phone in the washing machine, but surprisingly after a week it worked. I'm paying R 1090 per month on a company contract and I'm sick of these exclusive deals. If HTC does not want to sell, then there are alternatives.

Just get an el-cheapo Nokio and use that for two or three weeks. I'm sure Vodacom will get it soon.
Me....I've got options. Got an old MTN contract that I'm gonna use to get the phone, then pop my Vodacom sim in it and use the MTN 100 contract for emergencies. I don't have a landline, so it's justified. ;)

Why would you say that? Galaxy S has it's own advantages over the Desire HD. Super AMOLED screen, slightly smaller size, great music quality. It comes down to personal preference.

Although if you have an HD2 you can run Android on it, some hackers have made it possible. Specs aren't as good as the Desire HD of course but if you already have an HD2 you may want to try that hack.

the Desire HD has a newer generation of snapdragon inside of it, not to mention the HD2 is older (its successor is the HD7 of course with similar specs to the Desire HD)
the Desire HD has 8mp as opposed to the HD2's 5mp
the Desire HD has almost 60% more ram than the HD2
the Desire HD i presume has a better screen (just an assumption)
my friend uses his HD2 using the android hack (from xda-dev)
for the most part it is fine, but 1 or 2 apps may run buggy otherwise.
the desire hd boots in 2 seconds !!!!!

What about the normal Desire vs the Desire HD?
From what I have seen in reviews, many reviews compare the normal Desire to iPhone 4 and the Galaxy S, and rate the Desire as the better option. Granted, it is the Desire running on 2.2
The main differences between the Desire and the Desire HD is the HD having a 8mp camera versus the 5mp camera in the normal Desire
More onboard storage (8/16GB in the Desire HD)
Bigger screen for the Desire HD. The normal desire has a smaller AMOLED screen.
Apart from that, the specs are exactly the same. Both can record video in HD.
So I wonder if it is worth waiting for the Desire HD when the normal Desire is available. If you can get the normal Desire on Android 2.2 then the phones are almost exactly the same. Some review sites rate the HD as having a too big screen, so getting the normal desire is also an option:

Very interesting. I've noticed that many people are worried about the Desire HDs battery life (myself included) but you have to consider the newer more efficient release of snapdragon, will have less of an impact on battery life as the older version of snapdragon did.

It all depends which Android will be available for the normal Desire in SA.....if you can get it with 2.2 Froyo then there really are not a lot of difference between the Desire and the HD one. It is more a case of wanting the latest and best, even though it is not really that much better. Between Desire HD, Desire and Galaxy S it is very much a case of personal choice. They are all very good. I have a Hero, and my GF has a Samsung Omnia (which sucks and which she hates) so therefore I am very much biased towards the HTC for her new phone.

I'm also a bit perplexed as to why the phone is so cheap on MTN....it's the new flagship HTC Android phone after all.
*Saw the cash price for it is R6,954.99 on www.expansys.co.za, which is also nogal cheap. Maybe it's the fact that it's not a Super AMOLED display they're using, or HTC wants to give Samsung + Motorola a good run for their money.

Yeah, I'm doing an upgrade. I just went to a local MTN shop (MTN Malmesbury) and asked them to order me the HTC Desire HD. They said they've place an order for the phone (I watched him do it, funky dealer app he was using), so hopefully when the main center gets stock, I'll get my Desire HD.

Engadget's review is a bit negative & the points not really valid.
They had three negatives about the phone :
1. The edges at the side....now I've never swiped my iPhone from side to side, just a quick flick in the middle, so the dude has obviously not used a touch screen display before. And the edges are there to put the phone down on its face if you want to silence it in a meeting - very cool.
2. Battery life.....we all know big screen touch phones suck power like there's no tomorrow, fortunately I've got some first hand experience with my iPhone 3G, so it's nothing new. I've made peace with that. And reading some of the comments from actual owners of Desire HDs, you CAN go for more than a day with light use. If you're a heavy user, just take your charger with you, or put in on the dock (optional).
3. The camera lens that's touching the surface when you put it down....also, reading some of the comments....not true. There is actually a metal strip that protects the camera lens, as some of the Desire HD owners pointed out.
I still think it's the best Android phone money can buy right now & definitely getting one.

Engadget are really harsh. i agree with what you say, you dont have to scroll your finger all the way to the end of the device (i dont). one thing you can take away from this review is that they only complain about the smallest issues, which implies that the phone is itself really brilliant and complete.
Maddmatt
27-10-2010, 07:16 PM
Engadget don't make any meaningful comments on the audio quality. Did they really judge the SRS and Dolby sound using the internal speaker or did I read that wrong?
They really give the small issues more than their fair share of time. Why does the guy even swipe his finger that far? On my Galaxy S I feel no need to swipe my finger right off the screen.
Still, the battery life sounds pathetic. Surely that issue and the sound quality deserved more time than the fact that his fingers made a noise when he unnecessarily swiped the bezel next to the screen...
A big phone like that is going to be used for media so the sound quality (with earphones, not just the built in speaker) is very important.
I liked that phone until this review. At least now I don't need to envy it.

But what I can say is that MTN has the worst salesmen! Don't believe a word they say! The guy I took the upgrade from at MTN Pavillion told me the phone wont be available for at least 3 months. This was 2 weeks ago! And now Vodacom has confirmed that it will be available in two weeks (Head Office - through Twitter). I guess that sales people are too lazy or incompetent to check in their inventory system. Any self respecting business would have real time inventory system with information like stock levels, delivery ETA, and all of that stuff.
I have learnt very long ago that never trust even single word that a sales person says. Trust them as same as you trust a used oh sorry "pre-owned" car sales.

i think its much of a muchness. the D has better pixel density but the DHD has a bigger screen (same res), the D has AMOLED/S-LCD screen and the DHD has (S??)-LCD

good question. here is a simple comparison. the S-LCD and Super AMOLED are neck and neck, i think S-LCD just wins by a small margin.
guys I still haven't gotten a confirmation weather the DHD is S-LCD or just LCD
can anyone confirm? because GSMarena says its S-LCD but all other reviewers dont even specify what screen technology is behind the DHD
edit: indoors tho the AMOLED / Super AMOLED shines far beyond LCD

My old Nokia Navigator & SE P990i had front facing cameras & I can honestly say.... I have never ever used it. My iPhone 3G doesn't have one & I've never missed it there either. :p
With regards to direct sunlight, I've read in other forums that the DHD display is very readable in direct sunlight.....but, if they are all telling lies, worst scenario is that you'll have to cup the display with your hand. :)

Well .. good news about the /init process problem
A fix has been found to stop the /Init process lagging the phone.
On your phone go to..
Menu/settings/applications/development/now turn on Usb debugging..
This seems to keep the / init process at 0% CPU usage, it also works when the /INIT problem starts, turning USB debugging on will make the /INIT process drop back to 0%, very nice to see.
Ive contacted the Dev to find out if he can tell us why this method has fixed the problem.
Still need an update from Htc but at least we can use our phones again..
There doesn't seem to be any negative effects from turning this option on, the only thing to note is turning it off to connect to your pc could bring the /init process back and lag your phone. You can download Android Manager from the market for free which will allow you to transfer data from your pc using Wi-Fi, using this app you can keep the USB Debugging on.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT 2 - It looks like you can connect to the pc via USB cable with the debugging turned on without problems, the only difference is that it will try and install additional drivers...because of the debugging mode..
Im using windows 7 and the ABD driver wont install...this however does not effect transferring via the USB cable...
We should also watch the battery as this may actually increase battery life...

maybe you 1st but i cant wait, I've even had thoughts of other phones but coming back and reading ur guys thoughts makes me want a desire HD even more but anyway i just hope its a strong phone as my last htc screen broke twice ok so it fell off the desk>>>>>>>>>:p
Fanks Howie, you're too kind. :)
Yeah, I've looked at so many phones till I actually got fed-up, but this is THE most complete phone out there right now.
Also looked at Windows 7 phones, but the OS is just not there yet. Maybe in a year's time, but then Android will most probably be miles ahead with Gingerbread + . Another strong contender was the Samsung Galaxy S, but the Desire HD packs the latest tech (14.4Mbps HSDPA), more RAM. Last, but not least, I actually did look at the iPhone 4 (yes, I did :( ), but the antennae issues just made it a big no-no, since I'm left-handed + a lot of people are complaining that it's very uncomfortable to hold when having a long chat.
SO.....the Desire HD is my choice.

That is a valid argument, Shads. Ok, I'll phone Leaf and arrange it.....oh crap, there's no answer. :p

the only REAL issue with this phone is the battery (since we actually do want the big screen).
so to sort that out, get yourself one of these (http://www.amazon.com/DEXIM-BluePack-3000mAh-Lithium-BlackBerry/dp/B002QUYYKY) :)
edit... btw, their after sales service is awesome! got myself one of these in the UK, when I got back in SA it wasent workin so well. So I contacted them and they replied immediately, saying I should courier it back to them in China. I thought... WHAT! But they paid all shipping cost (account with DHL), and I got a new one in just 8 days :)

Same here + I've got an USB car charger as well. Sorted!
I'm used to this, my iPhone 3G doesn't last longer than a day & I just put it in its cradle when I go to bed. What's the big deal?

Maybe we were too used to long battery life for dumbphones running days into week.

My thoughts as well...somehow people still expect the charge-my-phone-once-a-week battery life from their smartphones, which is simply not gonna happen if you use it regularly.
Let's face it, modern smartphones have a 1Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, 16GB storage....doesn't it sound more like a computer than a phone?
"Dumb phones" didn't have 3G, didn't do web browsing, didn't do push email, argh....the list goes on.

Just wait till your smartphone is a year old... then we'll see battery times of 6 - 8 hours (If that!)

My iPhone 3G is two years & two months old now....and I still get a full day's use out of it. :)
*I regularly let the battery discharge completely, so might be why it's so good. Gonna do exactly the same with my Desire HD.
